A Christmas Story is a 1983 movie based upon the best-selling collection of short stories by Jean Shepherd under the title In God We Trust: All Others Pay Cash. The movie has an 8.0 IMDB rating and an 89 percent on Rotten Tomatoes. Though filmed in the early eighties, A Christmas Story takes place in the forties. The story focuses on Ralphie Parker, a nine-year-old boy who wants a Red Ryder B.B. gun for Christmas. The movie then ensues on a series of comedic mishaps, that will keep viewers of all ages entertained.

Jean Shepherd is the movie’s narrator, grown up Ralphie Parker. The following cast of A Christmas Story is as follows:

  • Jean Shepherd as the grown up Ralphie (narrating voice
  • Peter Billingsley as Ralphie Parker
  • Ian Petrella as Randy Parker
  • Melinda Dillon as Mrs. Parker
  • Darren McGavin as The ‘Old Man’ Mr. Parker
  • Scott Schwartz as Flick
  • Yano Anaya as Grover Dill
  • Tedde Moore as Miss Shields
  • Jeff Gillen as Santa Claus
  • R. D. Robb as Schwartz
  • Zack Ward as Scut Farkus

In addition to the hilarious plot and subplots, A Christmas Story captures the feel of Americana in the forties. It tells a story that children of all ages may identify with as it focuses on Ralphie’s desire for a Christmas present that everyone around him essentially says is out of the question. The movie also highlights the type of situations that occur within a common, American family. Though A Christmas Story is a time-period comedy, the situations the Parker’s find themselves facing are common to all. It doesn’t matter how much money you have, your ethnicity or background, everyone has neighbors they don’t care for, loses their temper, finds an item they love that others despise, and has to deal with life situations the best they can. Jean Shepherd’s narration reminds us that when we get older, our point of view changes and while a situation might be hard or unbearable during childhood, our adult view may find that it’s a situation that shaped our character.

A Christmas Story is a cult classic. It wasn’t a huge success upon its original release, but over the years has found a multi-generational fan base. For many, the 24-hour, A Christmas Story movie marathon is a tradition where many households keep the television tuned into the movie throughout their celebrations.
