Hermaphrodite horse turns out to be an Australian winner

A race-winning Australian horse turned out to be a hermaphrodite.
Tuscan Abbe appeared to be a promising mare after winning a series of horse races.
However, an internal investigation on suspicion of doping – which was launched after a particularly impressive win – has shown the horse is actually male, at least some of the time.
While tests concluded Tuscan Abbe has the Y chromosome of a stallion, and produces a large amount of testosterone, this is a cyclical process. When she was re-tested, the results were negative. Two weeks later, the same tests showed her testosterone levels going “through the roof”.
The horse is what is known in racing terms as an intersex mare.
Racing trainer Les Kosklin said: “I actually said to the owners early on, she’s be good for competing in the ‘Ladyship Mile’ next year. But we might have to change that to the ‘Miracle Mile’ now.”
