Hurricane Sandy brought wind, waves, rain, and a 712-ton, 168-foot-long tanker to Staten Island last night.

The Gothamist reports that 170-foot long water tanker was pulled more than a mile from its mooring last night during the storm and ended up running aground onto Front Street on Staten Island.

ABC reports that more than a third of the tanker was pushed up onto the street. No one was on the ship at the time, and no one was injured in the incident.

The tanker at Staten Island is a good indication of just how powerful Hurricane Sandy was last night. At least 16 people died during the storm last night, and millions were left without power. This morning, President Obama declared disaster areas in New York and New Jersey. According to the News Press, the President is expected to declare disaster areas in other locations in the next few days.

The White House said in a statement: “The President today declared a major disaster exists in the State of New Jersey and ordered federal aid to supplement state and local recovery efforts due to Hurricane Sandy beginning on October 26, 2012, and continuing.”

The tanker on Staten Island isn’t the only indication of Hurricane Sandy’s disastrous impact. A construction crane was snapped during the storm last night, more than 80 percent of Atlantic City is believed to be underwater, and some people reported seeing sharks swimming down the streets.
