NFL Rumors: Rex Ryan Doesn’t Have A Chance

Rex Ryan’s chances of maintaining his job at the end of this season are slim to none.

As reported by ESPN‘s Adam Schefter, it looks like Rex Ryan will be ousted – possibly before the end of the season.

“League sources say Rex Ryan is probably approaching his final games as the Bills’ head coach,” Schefter wrote this morning before the Bills defeating the winless Cleveland Browns. He added that Ryan is “aware of what’s ahead, sources said, which creates an awkward situation surrounding the Bills until the change is made.”

Schefter also noted that GM Doug Whalen — who supposedly has a poor relationship with Ryan — will be retained no matter what happens to Ryan.

“While Buffalo is preparing to part ways with Ryan, the organization is expected to retain general manager Doug Whaley, who is expected to be given a chance to hire his third different head coach, after having a hand in the hirings of Ryan and former Bills head coach Doug Marrone.”

Rex Ryan burst onto the coaching scene with the New York Jets in 2009, leading his team to a wild card berth followed by an improbable run to the AFC Championship game. He came within a half of beating Peyton Manning but ultimately came up short. He followed it up with yet another trip to the AFC Championship game and yet another heartbreaking loss, this time against Ben Roethlisberger and the Pittsburgh Steelers.

The next four years saw Ryan coaching for his job as the talent around him depleted. The GM that hired him, Mike Tannenbaum, was fired following a disastrous 2012 campaign that saw the team bring in much-hyped quarterback Tim Tebow. Tebow’s presence created a circus-like atmosphere that Ryan never fully recovered from. He was let go, along with replacement GM John Idzik in 2014.

Ryan didn’t stay unemployed for long, however, as he was picked up by the Buffalo Bills the very next season. But after a disappointing first year where he led a team that had previously gone 9-7 and narrowly missed the playoffs to an 8-8 record, the heat was on for Rex to produce.

He tried to use those rumors as motivation to his team as part of a profanity-laced motivational speech to his team, as reported by NJ Dot Com.

“Everything’s questioned,” Ryan told his players. “I forgot to how to f*****g coach. ‘The players don’t respond to Rex, he don’t know what the f**k he’s doing anymore.'”

And while the Bills did ride a four-game win streak earlier in the year, things fell into dire straights with the team hovering around.500 yet again and the Bills unlikely to make the playoffs.

Ryan himself thinks he’s gotten a raw deal and believes he should remain the head coach of the Bills according to Sporting News.

“What do you think I’m going to say? You’re dang right I do,” Ryan said last week when asked whether he thinks he should be retained as coach. “It hasn’t gone exactly the way I wanted it to go, that’s obvious. But we have three games left and we’ll try to win every one of them.”

But ultimately it feels as if his pleas will fall on deaf shoulders. The Bills will also have to make a decision on whether to retain their quarterback Tyrod Taylor, as reported by Ian Rapoport.

Either way, it looks like big changes are coming, starting with head coach Rex Ryan.
