‘The Batman’ Won’t Be Rushed, Says Ben Affleck

Since the release of Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, one of the most anticipated new DC Entertainment projects has been the promise of a new Batman solo film, which is to be written and directed by the film’s lead, Ben Affleck.

Plans have been moving forward and there’s no reason to expect that The Batman won’t make its planned 2018 theatrical premiere, but, as Ben Affleck now suggests, fans shouldn’t hold that date as something written in stone. Affleck suggests he won’t hesitate to push The Batman‘s release back, if it means delivering a better film.

Comicbook reports that Ben Affleck is working on the script for The Batman in tandem with DC Entertainment Universe boss Geoff Johns, and that the film is on schedule to begin filming in the spring of 2017 to meet its planned 2018 release. That being said, however, it is still early in the pre-production phase and anything can happen to push back the release of The Batman, which is something Ben Affleck feels is a very real possibility.

“I’m still working on the script,” said Affleck. “I’m not going to write and direct anything that I don’t think is good enough to be made. I’m definitely going to make sure I have something that is special—there’s not enough money in the world to make a mediocre version of Batman worth it.”

Affleck also revealed that his three children are very proud to know that their dad plays Batman. Ben says his 5-year-old son, Sam Garner Affleck, is the biggest fan of the three, because he’s just entering that superhero idolizing phase.

“He still sort of thinks I might really Batman,” says Ben. “I know he’ll realize eventually I have feet of clay, but I’m enjoying it while it lasts.”

While Ben Affleck is dedicated to delivering his masterpiece in due time, there’s another film requiring Affleck to appear as Batman, which is Zack Snyder’s Justice League, due out later in 2017. As Monkeys Fighting Robots reports, Snyder has released the first image of Affleck in that film, showing Batman and the new Batmobile in a single frame. The Dark Knight is as brooding as ever, as he appears to be approaching the Batmobile and may be on his way to reunite with the other members of the Justice League.

Warner Bros. has released a synopsis for Justice League, which seems to place Batman and Wonder Woman at the heart of a new threat, following the death of Superman in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.

The Justice League synopsis reads as follows.

“Fueled by his restored faith in humanity and inspired by Superman’s selfless act, Bruce Wayne enlists the help of his newfound ally, Diana Prince, to face an even greater enemy. Together, Batman and Wonder Woman work quickly to find and recruit a team of metahumans to stand against this newly awakened threat. But despite the formation of this unprecedented league of heroes-Batman, Wonder Woman, Aquaman, Cyborg and The Flash-it may already be too late to save the planet from an assault of catastrophic proportions.”

Jeremy Irons has also revealed that both Ben Affleck and Zack Snyder will be making greater use of his character, Alfred Pennyworth, in upcoming DC Entertainment films, according to another Comicbook article. Irons states that he’s secured a promise from Ben that Alfred will play a larger role in The Batman.

While Alfred will be the butler to one of the seven leads in Justice League, Jeremy says he will not be seen as much in the Snyder film.

“It’s clear I will not be dominating that film,” Irons said.

Justice League is set for a November 17, 2017 release.
