Khloe Kardashian And Lamar Odom Divorce Finalized
It’s final. The long and rocky relationship and marriage of Khloe Kardashian and Lamar Odom is finally over with their divorce finalized on December 17, 2016. It’s been four years since Khloe first filed for divorce from Lamar. Since then, it’s been a series of breakups and makeups through the seven-year marriage. Most of their problems came from Lamar’s substance abuse issues. Lamar has had a problem with cocaine, which prompted Khloe’s first divorce proceedings back in August of 2013.
The couple were initially wed in Beverly Hills at a private estate in September of 2009. Khloe Kardashian has stated that divorce was something she hated to consider because she considers herself to be a devout Christian. In an article written for Lenny published on May 17, 2016, Khloe explained how she was able to reconcile her decision to divorce, saying that she “came to a point in my marriage where I had to make the choice to take care of my own mental and emotional well-being in order to protect myself and my happiness. I am at peace with that decision and do feel like I honored my vows to the very end.”
Khloe and Lamar had initially been set to finalize their divorce in July of 2015, and the paperwork was in the court’s hands. When Lamar suffered his overdose in October of that year, Khloe made the decision to stop the divorce proceedings. She made this selfless gesture to ensure that Lamar would get the best healthcare possible and so he wouldn’t have to recuperate alone. After Lamar got clean, it looked like the couple would decide to stay married. Khloe broke up with her beau, Houston Rockets player James Harden, in February. She and Lamar then spent a romantic Valentine’s Day together and were spotted on several intimate getaways together.
However, Lamar started to drink again and that’s when Khloe decided that enough was enough. She made the decision that she wasn’t going to stay with someone who wasn’t willing to get help. Khloe filed for divorce from Lamar in May of 2016, citing irreconcilable differences. She filed the final paperwork for the divorce on December 9, 2016, and the courts dissolved the marriage on the 17th.
Lamar is reportedly quite upset about the divorce, knowing that he is to blame for the divorce. According to Hollywood Life, “…he is thinking of all the good times, all the help Khloe [Kardashian] gave him when he was in the hostpital, and he knows he blew it. He had a great girl and he will eventually move on, but it is a sad time for Lamar because he knows he let the right girl get away. He is very emotional about it ending officially.”
As for Khloe, it seems like she’s doing her best to move on. She is in a serious relationship with Cleveland Cavs power forward/center Tristan Thompson and has enjoyed several publicized romantic getaways with him. She has also legally filed to have her last name changed back to just Kardashian, dropping the Odom for good.
Khloe and Lamar have a divorce agreement in place which includes honoring the prenuptial agreement from 2009. That prenuptial agreement kept both of their fortunes separate, rather than pooling them.
This is important, because California is one of 11 states that have community property laws for marriages. Essentially, money earned during the marriage by either party is considered to belong equally to both husband and wife. That would mean that the millions both of them made from Keeping Up with the Kardashians and the spinoff, Khloe and Lamar, would have been up for grabs. The prenuptial agreement makes it clear as to whose money and property is whose, which is part of why the divorce was able to be granted so quickly. Additionally, both of them have waived spousal support.
As far as their joint entertainment company Khlomar is concerned, it is set to be dissolved and the assets will likely be split evenly between the two.
