WWE Rumors: AJ Styles Vs. Undertaker ‘Royal Rumble’ Match Teased By WWE YouTube Video?

The ongoing WWE rumors about an AJ Styles vs. Undertaker match at the Royal Rumble may have heated up again, as a brand new video could provide a clue that the match is scheduled to take place. There has been speculation for some time now that this upcoming Mania could be the least for “The Deadman” and that the most fitting final opponent would be superstar John Cena. To add to the big feeling of the match, there may even be a championship involved on top of another stipulation. So could the new WWE video they released on their YouTube page clue fans in that the dream match will take place?

On Friday, December 16, WrestlingInc reported that WWE posted a new Undertaker video on their YouTube page. In the video clip, they go over five current competitors they’d like to see Taker get into the ring with for dream matches. The superstars include the behemoth Braun Strowman, “The Demon” Finn Balor, NXT champion Shinsuke Nakamura, WWE Universal Champion Kevin Owens, and current WWE World Heavyweight Champion AJ Styles. While Undertaker hasn’t been in the ring with any of these superstars, some recent comments by AJ Styles on SmackDown Live could have hinted that a match is coming up soon.

On this past Tuesday’s episode of SmackDown, AJ Styles joined The Miz and Maryse in the ring for a new edition of “MizTV,” the in-ring talk show Miz does. During the conversation, the two competitors joked about Styles having to worry he still will have to face James Ellsworth in a title match at some point. According to WrestleZone in their SmackDown recap, Ellsworth was sent home due to illness. After the jokes about Ellsworth, AJ commented that he’s already defeated John Cena and Dean Ambrose and that there’s nobody left at his level. He said it several times in different ways and even asked who else there is to worry about. Well, he must have forgotten that the Undertaker was in the ring with him and several other superstars before Survivor Series 2016.

There have been rumors that Undertaker and AJ Styles would hook up at WrestleMania next year, but also rumors that the two might meet as soon as the Royal Rumble. In fact, one of the most plausible potential storylines that could make a lot of sense from a booking standpoint would have Taker show up soon on SmackDown and set AJ Styles straight that he has not defeated someone on another level. The two would compete in a match at the Royal Rumble over AJ’s title, which Undertaker would win. John Cena wins the Royal Rumble and then faces Taker at Mania in a huge match. It could be Cena’s record-tying 16th title win and Taker’s final match in a legendary career.

John Cena is currently amongst the top four favorites to win the Royal Rumble in January. Goldberg continues to lead all competitors as the favorite based on his quick success against Brock Lesnar. He is followed by Finn Balor, who has been away from WWE since the Raw after SummerSlam when he had to give up his Universal title. That leaves Chris Jericho and John Cena tied for the next favorites, and both make sense as challengers for the respective titles on Raw and SmackDown.

As WWE Leaks mentioned in their report, the fact that John Cena isn’t mentioned in the video could be an indicator that “WWE isn’t showing its hand” and a match has been set up between the two. However, the theme of the video is five superstars who have “escaped Undertaker’s wrath” during his illustrious career. John Cena and Undertaker have been in the ring against each other before, with Undertaker battling Cena back in John’s “Thuganomics” gimmick days. It’s just been a while since they’ve crossed paths.

So the possibility of these two legends of the ring meeting in April 2017 for WrestleMania 33 makes a great deal of sense. Taker has faced many of the biggest names in the business, some twice even, on the “grandest stage of them all.” He hasn’t faced John Cena at the event. Having these two compete in a main event match where Goldberg vs. Brock Lesnar is also on the card, could make for one of the biggest draws in WWE pay-per-view history. It also makes a great deal of sense to put a legend like Undertaker in the ring with a legend like AJ Styles ahead of Mania, because that would really help build the hype for that PPV as well.

Styles is set to face Dolph Ziggler on the final episode of SmackDown Live for 2016 with the title on the line as Dolph won a Fatal Fourway No. 1 contender’s match. It’s likely that AJ wins this match only to have The Undertaker show up and put him on notice that he has yet to defeat “The Deadman” in his yard.

WWE fans, do you think AJ Styles and The Undertaker will meet at the Royal Rumble? Who will Taker face at WrestleMania 33?
