Andrew Garfield Responds To The ‘Spider-Man: Homecoming’ Trailer

It must have been a little difficult for Andrew Garfield to watch the first trailer for Spider-Man: Homecoming. Tom Holland, the brand new incarnation of Spider-Man, only had the chance to step into the role because both of The Amazing Spider-Man films were a disappointment, even though Garfield’s work in the role was widely praised.

But Andrew Garfield was able to look beyond any jealousy that he might have towards his fellow Brit Tom Holland, though. In fact, while speaking to Entertainment Tonight, via Comic Book, about his work in Silence, Andrew Garfield admitted that he’s already watched the Spider-Man: Homecoming trailer and that he’s just as excited as every other moviegoer for it.

Andrew Garfield admitted the following.

“I watched it! It’s great. I think it looks great. I’m really excited to see it, I can’t wait. I’m a big fan of Tom and that character, so I’m just really excited to see it.”

The first trailer for Spider-Man: Homecoming caused quite a buzz when it was released last Thursday. After premiering on Jimmy Kimmel Live it was quickly uploaded to the world wide web, where it was gobbled up by eager superhero fans and it buzzed quite fervently online.

According to Variety, media-measurement firm comScore calculated that 612,000 new conversations about Spider-Man: Homecoming began online in the days building up to the trailer, as well as those after it was released. This was an impressively high score for Marvel Studios. For comparison, when Captain America: Civil War was actually released into cinemas back in early May, there were 749,129 new conversations regarding the film in the week leading up to its release.

But despite the interest generated by the first trailer for Spider-Man: Homecoming, Andrew Garfield insists that he’s happy to have moved on from the role and the burden of being in the blockbuster because it has allowed him to concentrate on new projects.

Back in October while speaking to Fandango, Andrew Garfield confessed that if Sony had progressed with The Amazing Spider-Man 3 and hadn’t allowed the character to be rebooted in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, he wouldn’t have been able to star in both Silence and Hacksaw Ridge. Garfield’s work in both of these roles has seen him touted for Oscar recognition.

Garfield explained.

“To be honest, I would not have been able to work with Mel Gibson and Martin Scorsese if I had done Spider-Man 3. I’m incredibly grateful that I get to now go and watch another man play Spider-Man who I think is a fantastic actor in Tom Holland. You know what, it’s sliding doors, right? There are so many possible outcomes; so many positives and potential downsides to that situation.”

“If I am being totally honest, I am so excited Spider-Man is back in the hands of Marvel. I think that’s a really awesome move. It was a move that I’ve been advocating since I was offered the Spider-Man gig five or six years ago. I’m also excited for Tom Holland. I think he’s a very emotional, truthful, funny, physical actor, and I love the filmmaker — it all really couldn’t be in any better hands. I’m really stoked for it.”

At the same time, though, Andrew Garfield has been quite frank about the disappointment he feels over his Spider-Man films. In fact, earlier this month, Garfield admitted that The Amazing Spider-Man films actually left him a little bit heartbroken. As the Inquisitr previously reported, Garfield candidly admitted the following.

“There’s something that happened with that experience for me where story and character were actually not top of the priority list, ultimately. And I found that really, really tricky. I signed up to serve the story and to serve this incredible character that I’ve been dressing as since I was three, and then it gets compromised and it breaks my heart. I got heartbroken a little bit, to a certain degree. Not entirely.”
