Lamar Odom, Reality TV, And Rehab: Former Basketball Player To Star In Own Show, Source Reports

Soon, fans could be seeing a lot more of Lamar Odom and his road to recovery.

Lamar Odom made headlines earlier this week when he checked into a rehab program. Soon after, rumors began to circulate that Odom would star in his own reality TV show.

People confirmed those rumors Wednesday, writing that Lamar Odom’s reality TV show will focus on his life and recovery.

“The show will be about his life, recovery — all about him.”

The show, which has not yet filmed, is scheduled to air “sometime in 2017.”

Odom has publicly struggled with substance abuse for many years, but his addiction issues seemed to hit a peak in October of 2015 when he was found unconscious in a Las Vegas-area brothel. Odom was airlifted to a hospital, where he spent several weeks recovering from an alleged overdose of cocaine and sexual performance-enhancing drugs.

In the year since the reported overdose, reports have indicated that Odom is trying to stay away from drugs and alcohol, but at times the former NBA player has struggled.

Nevertheless, the report from People indicated that Odom is currently sober and clean. He simply checked into the 30-day rehab program as a precaution.

“Lamar checked into rehab a week ago. He plans to stay for 30 days,” the unnamed source told People. “It’s a substance abuse program, but he was not abusing drugs when he went in. He is clean. This is a precautionary measure.”

“He wants to stay clear and focused. With the divorce from Khloé being finalized and the holidays coming up, he doesn’t want to slip up,” the anonymous source for People added. “He’s trying to take care of himself. He really wants to be better. His friends and family encouraged him to go in and he agreed and made the decision.”

Odom’s divorce from Khloe Kardashian, whom he married in 2009, is scheduled to be finalized this week. Khloe and Lamar separated in 2013 after reports that Odom’s drug use and cheating had taken a toll on the marriage.

The divorce was originally set to be finalized in 2015, but Kardashian withdrew the divorce paperwork after Odom was admitted to the hospital in Las Vegas. That way, Khloe, who sat by Lamar’s side throughout the ordeal, was able to continue to make medical decisions for her estranged spouse. Kardashian filed for divorce for the second time in May.

The source for People sounded optimistic about Lamar’s future at the rehab facility, but not everyone shares that attitude. During an episode of Live from E!, pop culture experts questioned whether Lamar would finish the entire program.

“The report is that he’s going to stay for 30 days, and I hope so, because he hasn’t. He hasn’t done these complete rehab stints. He’s never been all in. He’s been one-foot-in, one-foot-out, and we see where it’s gotten him. It hasn’t gotten him to a place of full sobriety — from what we can tell from the outside, at least.”

According to a separate report from People, Odom is working hard to improve himself and be healthy for his family.

“Everyone who knows and loves him just wants him to get back to his old self, but that will still take some time,” the insider told People. “He’s been through a lot and he’s still working on himself.”

What do you think of the report that Lamar is getting his own show? Will you tune in to watch Lamar Odom’s reality TV show? Why or why not?
