Will Smith Performs Impromptu Freestyle Rap At Gabrielle Union’s 40th Birthday Party

Will Smith can still rap.

If anyone doubts whether spending a couple of decades as an A-list actor have deteriorated the Fresh Prince’s ability to rhyme, Will Smith reminded them with an impromptu rap at Gabrielle Union’s 40th birthday party. With legendary hip-hop star Doug E. Fresh beatboxing, Will Smith delivered a rap that send the crowd at the party into a frenzy.

The star of Independence Day and the Men in Black series also performed one of his raps from his days as the Fresh Prince, the song “Summertime.” He then went into the song that brought him from noted Philadelphia rapper to acting icon — the theme to Fresh Prince of Bel Air.

Will Smith seemed to be soaking in the moment, the Daily Mail noted. He was smiling throughout his rap, bouncing along with the crowd and delivering lines that seemed to play perfectly to the crowd’s increasing energy. When he finished, Gabrielle Union rushed to give him a hug to say thank you.

The concert seems to be part of a nostaligia kick for Will Smith. In May he performed the Fresh Prince of Bel Air rap on The Graham Norton Show. Then in August he recorded a remix of “Summertime.” For fans who miss the rapping Will Smith, who has not released an album in years, the tidbits were a great throwback and reminder that his mic skills haven’t diminished.

The Will Smith rap quickly made its way around the internet, gaining international attention and plenty of accolades for the rapper/actor. As TMZ noted, “Some things never get old.”
