Here’s How Ian Somerhalder Wants ‘The Vampire Diaries’ To End – ‘Let Elena Wake Up And Have These Boys Gone’

The Vampire Diaries is now on its eighth and final season, and Ian Somerhalder has an ideal ending in mind. The actor admitted to Variety that he is clueless about the series’ direction because showrunners Kevin Williamson and Julie Plec remain hush-hush about it. Nonetheless, it would please him if the finale would leave Mystic Falls and its people unscathed.

“Honestly, I think the best thing for Mystic Falls would be for these guys and all of these vampires and witches to just go away. Let Elena wake up and have these boys gone and never know any of this happened. A phenomenal, go humanity thing would be where these creatures don’t win. We would love to see the two boys go down to the Caribbean somewhere and sit on a beach drinking some 60-year-old Caribbean rum, and as the sun comes up, just toast each other, give each other a hug, and take off their rings and throw them into the sea and let them just poof — turn into ash. I’ve created so much death and so much violence on this show that I think it would be such an amazing win for humanity if Damon and Stefan just went bye-bye. Let’s hope it happens.”

At this point, The Vampire Diaries loyalists are all wondering if Nina Dobrev will come back for the finale. When asked about it, Ian maintained his lack of idea.

“I don’t know. I have zero idea. As a producer, I do have a lot of information and then there’s a lot of information I don’t have. I want the audience to be happy, but I also am very pro human. I don’t think these guys should have the ability to wreak havoc, kill everybody, ruin the lives of so many and then get out with a happy ending. I think the happy ending is that we got to go on this amazing ride with these two guys. They’ve lived long enough.”

Reports have been emerging that Nina is trying her best to make time should the series finale require her presence. Julie told Entertainment Tonight that Nina is “100 percent ” willing to be in the finale, although they still need to fix their schedules. In April last year, Nina announced her departure from The CW because she wanted to “spread her wings” and try acting for the big screen.

The series did not completely kill off Elena because the showrunners remained open to the possibility of Nina returning. Instead of Elena dying, they made Kai put a spell on her. Elena will remain asleep and stuck in the coffin for as long as Bonnie remains alive. Only when Bonnie passes away will Elena wake up from the trance.

As the ending of The Vampire Diaries is fast approaching, Ian is busier than ever with his passion projects. He recently inked a deal with Warner Bros. TV as a producer although there’s no confirmation yet on the types of show that he’d create. For him, the opportunity is great as it would allow him to create and display meaningful content. He said it’s time to counteract some of the things purported by mass media and “start allowing people to feel a little bit better about themselves.”

Despite his appreciation for social media because of its capability to spark change, Ian did not deny that it could also be a root of unhappiness. By collaborating with the studio, he is determined to inspire “this next generation to be the most innovative, compassionate and grateful group of people the world has ever seen.” His wife, Nikki Reed, is on board the project too.
