UPDATE: The Las Vegas Sun is reporting that Sen. Reid, 72, was not seriously harmed in the crash and was rushed to hospital only on a precautionary basis:

“A source close to Reid’s family said, ‘He’s OK.’ The senator apparently had no visible injuries but was transported by a staff member to the hospital as a matter of caution.”

Fox News is reporting that Reid walked into the emergency room under his own power and according to a source, “his vital signs are fine, but he may have a rib injury.”

Las Vegas, NV — U.S. Senator Harry Reid, the majority leader in that chamber, is being treated in the emergency room at University Medical Center after a six-car accident in Las Vegas that occurred at about 1 p.m. local time.

Reid’s caravan of four vehicles was involved in the accident on I-15 northbound, a police source told the Las Vegas Review-Journal. No details on any injuries as yet.

Some media accounts indicate it was a chain-reaction crash prompted by a rear-end collision.

Sen. Reid was in Las Vegas today to participate in the dedication of the National Atomic Testing Museum which took place earlier in the day. Because of Reid’s position as majority leader, he travels with a security entourage.
