Celtics Co-Owner Could Make Run At Mass. Senate Seat

Stephen Pagliuca

Boston, MA (AHN) – The U.S. Senate race is likely to become competitive as Boston Celtics co-owner Stephen Pagliuca is considering a run for the Democratic nomination to fill Edward M. Kennedy’s Senate seat, according to reports.

Pagliuca, 54, who lives in Weston, a suburb of Boston, will be contending against seasoned political figures that include two U.S. House members and the state’s attorney general.

Among the contenders only Attorney General Martha Coakley has declared her candidacy, according to the Boston.com report.

The same report also indicated that US Representative Michael Capuano is expected to formalize his entry later this week, while US Representative Stephen F. Lynch is expected to announce his candidacy on Wednesday.

With a personal fortune estimated at several hundred million dollars, contenders for the US Senate seat could have a formidable challenge on Pagliuca, who has put together a lineup of policy specialists, media advisers, and political organizers.

However, Pagliuca’s reported involvement in a bid for the Boston Globe newspaper could complicate a senate run.

The Boston.com report indicated that the wealthy private equity investor could announce his political intentions within the next few days.

For the Republican side, state Senator Scott Brown reportedly signified his intention on Saturday to seek the party’s nomination.

The primary election is slated on Dec.8, while the general election will be in January.

The Celtics captured their 17th NBA championship last year after 22 years.
