‘Rick And Morty’ Season 3 Release Date Might Not Be Announced, But We Shouldn’t Be Surprised

By this time, fans of the critically-acclaimed animated black comedy Rick and Morty are coming to terms with the notion that the series would most likely not see a December 2016 release date. Despite Dan Harmon, one of the series’ creators, previously stating that the production team is aiming for a December 2016 debut, all signs are currently pointing to a 2017 Rick and Morty Season 3 release date instead. While this is understandable, especially considering the amount of work the sci-fi sitcom requires, there is still a significant chance that Season 3’s release date might end up earlier than what fans expect.

The release date for Rick and Morty Season 3 has been a notable topic among its fans for the better part of 2016. After Season 2 ended October 2015, the last episode’s post-credits scene triggered speculations that Season 3 would debut about a year and a half after, which would be sometime around April 2017. Speaking at the Magic City Comic-Con earlier this year, however, Dan Harmon stated that the Rick and Morty team are aiming for a December 2016 release date instead. Unsurprisingly, this has triggered a wave of speculations and rumors from fans of the show, with many stating that the year would not end without Rick and Morty Season 3 being back on air.

As the year wore on, however, it became apparent that Harmon’s prediction might have been far too optimistic. While there were reports that emerged stating that the script was done and that pre-production was already concluded, very little concrete details about the progress of Rick and Morty Season 3 were released. Recently, a Reddit user, PopDavid, who claims to be working as a Design Assistant for the animated cosmic horror series, stated that the December 2016 target release date is extremely unlikely at this point. The Redditor further urged fans to expect Rick and Morty Season 3 to be released sometime in 2017 instead, as reported by Inverse.

While the validity of the Redditor’s statements could not really be verified, PopDavid’s projected 2017 release date does make a lot of sense. After all, original speculations about Season 3’s release date were rooted from the post-credits scene of the last episode in Rick and Morty Season 2, where Mr. Poopy Butthole, a character on the animated black comedy who was recuperating from his injuries, urged fans to be patient until April 2017. Despite this being the most probable release date for Season 3, however, there is still a chance that Rick and Morty might end up giving its fans its biggest surprise yet.

Rick and Morty has always been a series that does not shy away from doing something unconventional. Over the last few years since it debuted on Adult Swim, the sci-fi comedy was lauded by viewers and critics alike for being a series which was not afraid to put itself waist-deep in taboo in order to deliver a compelling story. The fact that censorship, or the lack thereof, became a central aspect of the show over its first two seasons is proof of this.

With this in mind, it would actually be well within character for Rick and Morty to simply start Season 3 without officially announcing it to fans. Avid supporters of the series even stated that if Rick and Morty Season 3 just happens to air on Adult Swim without prior announcement, it would actually fit in with the whole nature of the series. Thus, while a December 2016 release date still seems unlikely, there is a chance that Season 3 might debut sometime before the initial April 2017 speculated release date.

If Rick and Morty does end up pulling off something as unconventional as an unannounced release date, it would not be too much of a stretch to speculate that the plot of Season 3 might also be just as unorthodox. Rick and Morty Season 2 ended with the alcoholic genius being sent to prison after turning himself in to the Galactic Federation. Thus, numerous fan speculations state that a good part of Season 3 would most likely involve around Rick’s rescue and eventual escape. Considering the nature of the black comedy, however, the chances of this happening and the chances of Season 3 simply featuring Rick already free from prison going about his life normally are practically equal.

With this, fans of the series are best advised to keep their eyes and ears open for any signs of Rick and Morty Season 3’s release date. The animated cosmic horror series has done nothing but pleasantly surprise fans since it started airing back in December 2013. If there’s anything that fans of the critically-acclaimed series should do, it would be to prepare themselves for anything. Fortunately, that also includes the possibility of Rick and Morty Season 3 being released earlier than what seems logically plausible.
