George Lucas Has Seen ‘Rogue One’, Here’s What He Thought

We’re now less than two weeks away from Rogue One: A Star Wars Story hitting cinemas on December 16, which means that the first reviews and reaction to the film will start to leak out as its release date draws closer.

But director Gareth Edwards has already received one review for Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, and he’s admitted that it’s the most important review that he’ll receive for the film, too. That’s because it has come straight from George Lucas, the man who not only created the Star Wars universe, but wrote and directed Star Wars Episodes I – IV, and provided the story for The Empire Strikes Back as well as co-writing Return Of The Jedi, too.

Thankfully for Gareth Edwards, George Lucas was a big fan of Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. The director made this revelation himself at a press event that was held for Rogue One over the weekend, confessing that he finally had the chance to show George Lucas Rogue One just a few days earlier.

Gareth Edwards told the press conference the following, via Screen Rant.

“Two days ago we got to show George the movie, and we all had a phone call and I got to speak with him yesterday, and I don’t want to put words into his mouth, but I can honestly say that I can die happy now. He really liked the movie. It meant a lot.”

Gareth Edwards then made the admission that we all expected, as he told the room full of packed journalists that George Lucas was the “most important review” that he’d hear regarding Rogue One. Gareth Edwards continued.

“To be honest, and no offense to anyone here, it was the most important review to me. You know, you guys are important, too, but he’s kind of God… I will take that conversation to my grave. His opinion means the world to me.”

George Lucas’ endorsement of Rogue One is huge news for the blockbuster, mostly because if he’d told Gareth Edwards that he didn’t like the film then it might have damaged the release of the film. Of course, there’s every chance that George Lucas was just trying not to rock the boat with his comments, while the more cynical of you might point out that we’ve only heard one side of the conversation and Gareth Edwards could be lying about George Lucas’ opinion of the film.

This time last year, George Lucas was being inundated with questions regarding his opinion of Star Wars: The Force Awakens, which was overseen by J.J. Abrams and launched the upcoming batch of Star Wars films. Lucas was rather careful with what he said about The Force Awakens making sure that he cut short of revealing his personal feelings towards the film.

When asked at the Kennedy Center Honors in Washington D.C. last December what he thought of The Force Awakens, Lucas responded, via Vulture, “I think the fans are going to love it. It’s very much the kind of movie they’ve been looking for.”

In the build-up to the release of Star Wars: The Force Awakens George Lucas made it perfectly clear just how uncomfortable he felt about someone else overseeing his project. During a discussion with The Washington Post ahead of seeing The Force Awakens George Lucas even compared it to going to the wedding of an ex.

“I gotta go to the wedding,” George Lucas insisted.

“My ex will be there, my new wife will be there, but I’m going to have to take a very deep breath and be a good person and sit through it and just enjoy the moment, because it is what it is and it’s a conscious decision that I made.”
