‘Outlander’ Star Sam Heughan Teases Major Season 3 Surprise, While Caitriona Balfe Promises More Sex

Some exciting developments are in store when Outlander returns to Starz in 2017. From brand new characters to Jamie (Sam Heughan) and Claire’s (Caitriona Balfe) epic reunion, there are plenty of things to look forward to in Season 3.

Although we are still a ways out from the season premiere, Heughan recently sat down with Pop Sugar and teased some major surprises for next year, including some differences between the books and the show.

What changes will be included in Season 3?

For starters, Heughan revealed that the show will pick up with Jamie fighting in the Battle of Culloden. In Diana Gabaldon’s books, Jamie doesn’t remember much about the fight apart from fractured and traumatic memories.

“Certainly the beginning of Season 3 is a slight deviation from the book,” Heughan shared. “We’re going to be showing a bit of Culloden, and what happened to Jamie. You’re going to see it, and I think it’s important since we talked about this battle, and that the Highlanders are doomed, and that they might be wiped out. It’s a reward for the fans.”

Heughan didn’t divulge much about the coming battle, but he did admit that even some of the crew was surprised by what was included in the scene.

“There’s one moment in particular that I didn’t even know we were going to shoot, and I know the crew didn’t, and everyone was like, ‘What the hell is this?!'” he stated. “There are some big surprises, but there are also some great moments from the book that we try to stick to as much as possible.”

Apart from the battle, the coming season features a significant time jump for Jamie and Claire. In fact, the characters will live some twenty years apart before reuniting in Jamie’s time. For Heughan, the time jump means Jamie will undergo a transformation in outlook.

“In book three, Jamie is many characters. He’s at least three, maybe four different things to people. He has different names, and basically he doesn’t want to be Jamie Fraser. He wants to die at the end of Season 2, and he goes into battle thinking he will,” Heughan explained.

“Aging became not about giving him a walking stick and gray hair. It became more about the experiences that he’s lived, and how that changes him. I think he is, at times, unrecognizable. Sometimes we see the Jamie we know, but it will be a journey for him to get back to being James Fraser.”

Once Jamie and Claire reunite, Outlander fans can expect their romance to heat right back up. In an interview with Vanity Fair, Balfe promised fans that Season 3 will feature a lot more intimacy than last year.

Some fans expressed their disappointment with the lack of sex scenes between Jamie and Claire, especially following a heated Season 1. Thankfully, that will all change next season, though it might take a little longer than expected.

“There will be some other sex going on,” Balfe began. “I think to really let the reunion and everything that’s going to happen once Jamie and Claire see each other, I think it’s really special. Maybe they’ll have to wait a little bit, but I don’t think it’s going to be as scarce as last season, shall we say?”

While fans eagerly wait for the premiere of the new season, Daily Record is reporting that Heughan is busy promoting his new promo advertisement for Barbour. The company just released new shots of Heughan in various outdoor scenes, and Outlander fans were quick to adapt the photos as their own.

The new season of Outlander is expected to premiere on Starz early next year.
