Chrissy Metz Of ‘This Is Us’ Clarifies Terms Of Weight Loss For Role As Kate

Chrissy Metz of This is Us continues to amaze her fans with her positive outlook on being plus size and now with her desire to lose the weight. Chrissy plays Kate Pearson on the hit television drama and her real life seems to be somewhat parallel to her character’s. On the show Kate is struggling with being overweight and announced to her family on Thanksgiving her plans to have gastric bypass surgery. So what does this mean for Metz in real life?

Just recently it was revealed that losing weight was in Chrissy’s contract for This is Us. Metz spoke with TV Line and said it was mandatory for her to lose weight along with her character. Chrissy said, “In our contract, it did state that that would be a part of it, to lose the weight in the trajectory of the character as she comes to find herself.” Metz also had the following to say, “I, as Chrissy, want to do things that mentally, emotionally and physically make me the best that I can be. That’s the intention for our writers and the development of the character.” This information got fans talking and wondering how and when Chrissy would lose the weight. Would Metz have gastric bypass surgery like her character Kate?

Chrissy appeared on The Ellen DeGeneres Show today to talk life, weight loss, and her role as Kate. Us Weekly shared details about the appearance and how excited Metz is to lose weight for her new star role. While Chrissy did previously say it was mandated she lose weight, Metz was quick to clarify to Ellen that she wanted to do it. Metz said, “I was kind of like, ‘I hope I get to lose weight.’ That’s a win-win for me — motivated in a different way this time. It wasn’t mandated. It wasn’t like, ‘You have to do this.’ But if this is the story line, naturally you would lose weight. So I’m excited if that should happen.”

Ellen asked Chrissy about Kate’s revelation that she wanted gastric bypass surgery and Metz stayed pretty tight lipped about the upcoming story-line. Chrissy wouldn’t reveal if it was a real possibility for herself in real life or in Kate’s life on the show. Metz had the following to say about the surgery, “It is a fast fix, and it’s not always the right answer. I can’t give it away too much.”

Metz had previously spoken with People and was sure to emphasize that both she and Kate will be shaping up “in a healthy manner.” Could this be a hint that neither Chrissy nor Kate will go through with the surgery? Metz spoke about beginning a training regimen that co-star Milo Ventimiglia introduced her to. Chrissy said in addition to the new training regimen she has been focusing on being healthier. Metz admitted it was a gradual process.

Fans have been inspired by Metz and her positive attitude towards plus-size women. In the midst of the new plans for weight loss, Chrissy was sure to remind fans that she would never change her views. Metz says, “Whether or not I lose weight or stay the same, it’s purely a choice of mine for health. Not because I think that plus size, curvy, voluptuous, big bodies aren’t attractive — because I think they’re awesome and sexy. … I’m not selling out the big girls. I don’t do that. That’s not me.”
