Hooksett, NH – Aviation authorities say two people died Thursday in a small plane crash near Interstate 93 in southern New Hampshire.

Fox News reports the plane, a single-engine Beechcraft, departed from Nashua and was heading to Laconia when it somehow lost control and struck a light pole adjacent to the highway.

Investigators say the collision caused the plane to nose dive onto I-93 north at the mile marker 26.2. The crash was reported just after 1 pm.

In a statement released this afternoon, state police said two people aboard the aircraft were killed, including a man who was ejected into the nearby woods in the crash and a woman, whose body was found in the plane.

Their identities were not known, state police said.

Following the crash, New Hampshire state police closed the ramp from I-93 North to I-293 South as well as two of the I-98 northbound lanes. Police asked the public to avoid the area and seek alternate routes for the evening commute.

Officials with the National Transportation Safety Board, which will lead the investigation, and the Federal Aviation Administration were en route Thursday afternoon, state police said.

According to FAA records obtained by WBZ-TV, the single-engine plane had been in three incidents prior to Thursday’s crash.

In June 1979, it was blown off the runway in Beaumont, Texas. It made a hard landing in July 1993 at the Falmouth Airport. The engine was destroyed and the nose gear was torn off in that incident, and “wind gusts” were blamed for the crash.

The third incident was in August 2010 when there was a problem with the landing gear in Nashua, New Hampshire.
