Green Bay Packers receiver Greg Jennings is headed for surgery.

After suffering a groin injury in the Packers’ season opener, Jennings has missed a total of four games this season and will likely miss a few more as he revealed to reporters Thursday that he will undergo surgery to repair the damaged muscle next week.

Jennings said the operation, to be performed Tuesday, October 30 in Philadelphia, is a relatively simple outpatient procedure that should take less than 30 minutes. It will repair his torn rectus abdominus muscle.

Jennings, who has only 78 yards on 12 catches for the year, didn’t give a timetable for his return Thursday, but says the recovery won’t end his season.

ESPN reports that in Jennings’ absence, the Packers have implemented a rotation of Jordy Nelson, James Jones and Randall Cobb in their three-man receiver sets.

They also still have veteran wideout Donald Driver on their roster for depth should another injury occur, and eventually Jennings will re-enter the mix as well.

“We want [Greg] to come back as quickly as he can, but he’s got to do what’s best for his body,” Green Bay QB Aaron Rodgers said. “I know his toughness and how badly he wants to be on the field. If he can’t be out there, you know it’s got to be something significant.”

CBSSports notes that the Packers’ next two games are against the Jaguars (1-5), who will be without their best offensive player, RB Maurice Jones-Drew, and the Cardinals (4-3), who have lost their last three games and are starting backup QB John Skelton.
