EFL Cup Preview, Arsenal Vs. Southampton: Prediction, Starting Lineups, And Betting Tips

Arsenal will look to secure a spot into the semi-final of the EFL Cup when they face Premier League outfit Southampton at the Emirates stadium on Wednesday.

The Gunners are in an excellent form at the moment, as they are 19 games unbeaten in all competitions. Their title hunt this season still remains intact with their 3-1 win against Bournemouth last Sunday.

Southampton ensured an important win against Everton last week in EPL. With that win, they climbed to the 10th position on the league table, and they seem confident to face the Gunners in this coming match.

The last time these two sides met at the Emirates, Arsene Wenger’s men won 2-1.

The Gunners, however, have a poor head-t0-head record against Southampton in the EFL Cup. In the 2014 League Cup match, Southampton knocked Arsenal out of the competition with 2-1 scoreline.

Arsenal’s injury woes still continue as several first team players are injured at the moment.

Oliver Giroud injured his hamstring during Sunday’s win against AFC Bournemouth. He is declared unfit to start against Southampton.

Santi Cazorla is once again unfit to start another match due to his achilles injury.

Right-back Hector Bellerin, who has been one of the star performers for Arsenal this season, will be sidelined from the match due to a foot injury he picked on the match against Tottenham.

The likes of Danny Welbeck and Chuba Akpom also will be unavailable vs. the Saints.

Manager Arsene Wenger is expected to make wholesale changes and rotate his squad. Emiliano Martinez played against Reading in the last round of the League Cup and may return to the starting lineup.

David Ospina is likely to start between the posts while Aaron Ramsey and Kieran Gibbs might be assigned with the first place start.

Matt Targett, Jeremy Pied, Harrison Reid, and Alex McCarthy will be unavailable for selection because of injuries.

Youngster Josh Sims displayed an amazing performance on his debut against Everton and may retain his starting position in this midweek’s tie against Arsenal.

Manager Claude Puel may not make many changes to the team, considering the fact that their opponents are a very strong side.
