Derek Hough Proves Why He Was The Best Best Man For Mark Ballas’ Wedding

Derek Hough is paying tribute to his brother just days after he stood by his side on the biggest day of his life. The six-time Dancing With the Stars mirrorball champ took to Instagram to say that it was an “honor” to serve as best man at longtime pal Mark Ballas’s wedding to singer BC Jean over the weekend. In a poignant post, Derek wrote that he witnessed Ballas and BC seal their love “under a beautiful oak tree in front of family friends.”

“Like the tree, may you stand together tall and proud,” Hough wrote to his friends. “May you always go out on a limb for one another to stay grounded and dig your roots in deep so that you may weather any storm. And always continue to grow, stronger and higher reaching towards the heavens. And to always enjoy the view.”

Derek wasn’t the only Hough to toast Mark and his bride. In her own Instagram post, Derek’s sister Julianne Hough wrote that she couldn’t be happier for her newly married friends. Hough also described the weekend-long bash, which included a Thanksgiving Day beach party, as “the best wedding weekend ever.”

In addition to Derek and Julianne, several more fellow Dancing With the Stars alums attended the weekend wedding, which took place at Calamigos Ranch in Malibu. Cheryl Burke, Sharna Burgess, Keo Motsepe, Sasha Farber, Emma Slater, and Jenna Johnson were all guests at the ceremony, according to Us Weekly. But no one was more excited than Derek Hough. Shortly before the ceremony, Derek posted a countdown photo and captioned it with: “It’s time.” Clearly, the DWTS pro took his best man duties very seriously.

Of course, longtime fans know that Derek Hough and Mark Ballas have an undeniable bond. The childhood friends refer to each other as brothers Derek because Julianne lived with Mark’s parents, Corky and Shirley Ballas, when they moved to England as children to study dancing. Decades later, the bond between the “brothers” is stronger than ever. In fact, Derek recently told Entertainment Tonight that he cried when he found out Mark landed the coveted role as the final Frankie Valli in the Broadway show Jersey Boys.

“It’s like a dream come true for him for sure, and I honestly cried when I found out,” Hough told ET. “I teared up because I just know how much this means to him and he is so excited and it’s awesome.”

Of course, it was a no-brainer that Derek Hough would be the best man at Ballas’ wedding. Hough previously said he was confident he would get the job. Earlier this year, the engaged couple told People that Mark’s childhood pal would undoubtedly stand by his side, but they admitted that they made Derek squirm a bit before asking him to be in their wedding.

“[Mark] hasn’t asked him, so Derek is getting a little cocky,” BC Jean joked to People.

Now that his best man duties are complete, Derek Hough can focus on his upcoming work projects. While the next Dancing With the Stars cycle doesn’t start until next spring, Hough will soon show off his moves in NBC’s annual live musical, Hairspray Live! Hough will play song and dance man Corny Collins in the live production less than a year after his sister nabbed the starring role in Fox’s Grease: Live. With so many years of DWTS under their belts, the Hough siblings are masters at live TV. In addition, Mark Ballas will skip the honeymoon (for now) and head back to Broadway to finish out Jersey Boys.
