[RUMOR] Nintendo Wii about to get a price drop

It’s the day none of us thought would ever arrive: the day Nintendo decides to cut the Wii‘s price tag. Or … it might be.

For almost three years now, through-the-roof sales of the Wii have meant Nintendo has been able to lie back and cackle as the green rolls in. Lowering the console’s launch price of $249 simply hasn’t been necessary, because the Wii has proven a sales beast.

The last couple of months, however, have seen some dramatic changes in the console arms race. While the Wii keeps posting healthy numbers, both the PS3 and Xbox 360 have seen price drops, and have enjoyed rocketing sales as a result. How, pondered industry commentators, would Nintendo react?

This Toys ‘R’ Us advert, scanned in by a Kotaku reader, may provide the answer.

Rather than the now-familiar price of $249 for a Wii with Wii Sports, this flyer sports a new MSRP of $199. This ad is reportedly due to be circulated at the end of September. If you’re one of the fourteen North Americans who don’t already own a Wii, watch this space for official confirmation.
