Williams’ Sisters Win Another Doubles Title; Serena Apologizes For Outburst

Flushing Meadows, NY (AHN) – After her semifinal exit outburst, Serena Williams came back with sister Venus to collect their 10th Grand Slam doubles crown on Monday at the 2009 U.S. Open.
The fourth-seeded Williams sisters demolished the top-seeded tandem of Zimbabwe’s Cara Black and American Liezel Huber 6-2, 6-2 at the Billie Jean King USTA National Tennis Center.
Playing in their first doubles final here in 10 years, the formidable American duo completely outplayed their counterparts and did not allow the defending champs a break-point chance in the match.
The Williams’ sisters, who had never lost in a Grand Slam doubles, collected three titles in the year. The American pair earlier bagged the Wimbledon and Aussie Open titles.
Prior to the match, a remorseful Serena issued a statement apologizing for the abusive and threatening tirade at a lineswoman following a 6-4, 7-5 semifinal loss to eventual champ Kim Clijsters at the U.S. Open.
Serena, 27, was penalized a point for her outburst on match point after being called for an apparently incorrect foot foul.
A $10,500 fine was slapped on Serena for unsportsmanlike conduct and could face further sanctions pending investigation by the Grand Slam Committee.
