Song Joong Ki Might Be Too Busy For ‘Descendants Of The Sun 2’

Descendants of the Sun will never be the same without Captain Yoo Shi Jin (Song Joong Ki) and Doctor Kang Mo Yeon (Song Hye Kyo) but their hectic schedules suggest that Descendants of the Sun 2 will have to adjust.

Korean phenomenon Descendants of the Sun was a huge success, propelling the title and its lead actors Song Joong Ki and Song Hye Kyo to international fame and glory. It goes without saying that something this phenomenal and successful, surely will not be simply given away. With Descendants of the Sun fans all over the world clamoring for a sequel, it’s impossible for the showrunners and producers to not take the bait.

ITechPost reports that Descendants of the Sun 2 will indeed happen and showrunners are looking at an air date sometime in 2017. Reports are coming in, however, that inevitable circumstances are delaying filming. Lead actors of Descendants of the Sun Song Joong Ki and Song Hye Kyo are reportedly too busy to make time for a sequel.

Song Joong Ki, especially, has reached an all new stardom status every since Descendants of the Sun. He has been commissioned to become the face of more than 30 local Korean and international brands in 2016 alone, and has been recently made Korean Tourism Honorary Ambassador by the Korea Tourism Organization. Apart from his commercial success, Song Joong Ki is also reported to star in two major films: Battleship Island and a rumored Train to Busan sequel.

Set in the Japanese colonial period and inspired by real-life events, Battleship Island will feature the true story of how Koreans were exploited on Hashima Island during the 1940s. Battleship Island will follow the journey of some 400 Korean people who risked their lives to escape from Hashima Island.

Song Joong Ki has become very involved in the making of Battleship Island, as he is set to star as North Korean Independence Group member Park Moo Young, who will infiltrate Hashima on a rescue mission. Yibada reports that talking to Hong Kong newspaper Sing Tao Daily, Song Joong Ki reveals that his Battleship Island role has pushed him to undergo extreme physical transformations to be able to fit the demands of the role.

“These days I’m going on a diet to make (my body shape) fit the character.”

Song Joong Ki adds that he is following a strict meal plan, alongside physical training sessions to appear more masculine and mature. There are reports going around that Joong Ki is also expected to shave his hair for the Battleship Island role.

Song Joong Ki and other cast members have officially began filming for Battleship Island last June in Cheongju, South Korea, and are expected to finish this November. And while showrunners and cast have been very tight-lipped about the filming of Battleship Island, a couple of photos and promotional posters have already made it on social media.

Apart from Battleship Island, rumors have been circulating that Song Joong Ki is set to star in a major role in Train to Busan 2. Korea Portal and various other websites started to report rumors and speculations that the Descendants of the Sun star is poised to take a doctor role in the upcoming sequel of zombie apocalypse film Train to Busan. Train to Busan, like Descendants of the Sun, has indeed become quite a success locally and internationally, even bagging various awards at the 49th Sitges International Film Festival in Spain.

Song Joong Ki’s involvement in Train to Busan 2, or if a Train to Busan sequel will materialize even, is very much speculation at this point. But with its success, again, it’s not impossible for a followup starring Korea’s hottest bachelor.

These commitments might have been eating a huge chunk of Song Joong Ki’s schedule, sparking the rumors that he won’t be able to take the lead in the Descendants of the Sun 2. But according to iTechPost, KBS has a back up plan ready and the sequel could focus, instead, on supporting cast members Jin Goo and Kim Ji Won. Although how that will play up, we can’t say for sure.

Producers of Descendants of the Sun have no given any official announcement regarding the sequel, so it might be a while before we see a Song Joong Ki and Song Hye Kyo reunion—if something is at the horizon at all.
