‘Westworld,’ Season 1 Episode 9 Preview: Dr. Ford Continues To Control His World And Maeve Propositions Hector

The penultimate episode of HBO’s Westworld delves further into the storylines of the hosts. Which means Episode 9 will likely reveal more about the many mysteries that reside in Westworld.

Spoiler alert: This article discusses Episode 9 of HBO’s Westworld. Please proceed with caution if you wish to avoid spoilers.

Episode 9 of HBO’s Westworld is titled “The Well-Tempered Clavier.” So what does that even mean? The Well-Tempered Clavier was a book by J.S. Bach. It contained a series of Preludes and Fugues in all major and minor keys composed by Johann Sebastian Bach. When it was published in 1722, a clavier was a generic name used to describe keyboard instruments such as harpsichords, clavichords, and organs.

In Westworld, piano music is used frequently during each episode, both visually and to set the mood by playing music. However, considering this is Westworld, it could also be a play on words, indicating someone or something is well-behaved or mild mannered. It could be assumed that Episode 9 could deal with a mild-mannered (or once mild-mannered) host, or that the music played on the piano in Westworld is used somehow to maintain behavior in the hosts.

The official synopsis according to Carter Matt for Episode 9 (entitled “The Well-Tempered Clavier”) is below.

“Dolores (Evan Rachel Wood) and Bernard (Jeffrey Wright) reconnect with their pasts; Maeve (Thandie Newton) makes a bold proposition to Hector (Rodrigo Santoro); Teddy (James Marsden) finds enlightenment, at a price.

“Written by Dan Dietz & Katherine Lingenfelter; directed by Michelle MacLaren.”

For a while now in Westworld, some hosts have been having flashbacks to previous stories they participated in that should have been wiped between each interaction. Now, it seems, Bernard will join this group of hosts in Episode 9.

As was seen in Episode 8, Dolores has reached a location in Westworld that not only Arnold told her to visit, but is creating an outpouring of flashbacks for her that connect her back to her past.

Episode 8 of Westworld also saw Maeve given administration privileges over the other hosts. She can now verbally alter story loops and dialogues while she is on the floor. The end of the episode saw her set up Hector’s bank heist in his favor. Now she has given Hector what he wants, it seems she has a proposition in return. Could Hector be the one to help her escape the confines of Westworld in Episode 9?

Finally, Teddy gets enlightened in Episode 9 of Westworld. So, does this mean the Man in Black (Ed Harris) reprogrammed him? Only by tuning into Episode 9 of Westworld will reveal the answers.

Episode 9: Preview

In the Episode 9 trailer, Dolores is questioning why she has not found happiness in the Maze, like she was promised. It is unclear who she is talking to, but, potentially, it could be Arnold or Bernard, considering Bernard recently told her about the Maze Game.

Maeve is also being questioned by Bernard. She has blood on her face and Bernard is asking her about her attack on Clementine (Lili Simmons). Maeve then grabs his hand, saying to him, “We have been down this road before.” So, is it possible Maeve and Bernard could have been involved in the problem the park had 30 years prior?

Bernard is also shown questioning Dr. Ford (Anthony Hopkins) about what might have been hidden from Bernard in the past.

Yet another host is seen telling the Man in Black that the Maze Game is not meant for him. So who is the Maze Game meant for, humans or hosts? The host who says this to the Man in Black is Angela (Talulah Riley). Prior to this viewers have seen her greet William (Jimmi Simpson) when he first embarked on his Westworld adventure, indicating she has changed roles within Westworld at some point in time.
