Shannen Doherty Is Returning To TV In A Reboot Of ‘Heathers’ Amid Public Breast Cancer Battle [Video]

Shannen Doherty has been very public about her ongoing battle with breast cancer. The former 90’s TV mainstay who starred in the iconic Aaron Spelling series Beverly Hills 90210 has been dealing with the devastating disease since 2015, and has recently shared photos of her hair being shaved, herself in hospital garb and even a video of her recent breast reconstruction appointment, on Instagram.

As AOL News reports, Shannen Doherty has been very frank and open about her medical drama, and has sworn to battle breast cancer to her dying day. Even if, as she predicted earlier this year, she has less than five years to live.

Now, after months of heartbreaking struggles and very public setbacks, Shannen Doherty appears to finally have some good news in her life. In fact, it appears that Doherty is now taking some steps back toward her career and a modicum of normalcy with her recent announcement, an announcement that has Shannen Doherty fans and supporters alike rallying in the star’s corner.

Late Tuesday night, Shannen Doherty announced to her Instagram fans and followers that she is returning to the Hollywood spotlight. As Entertainment Weekly reports, the 45-year-old starlet is coming back with a slash, by taking a role in the reboot of the 1988 campy cult classic, Heathers. The original Heathers was made for the big screen, and it featured a youthful Shannen Doherty as Heather Duke.

In the midst of what could be known as “the decade of the reboots,” TV Land is reimagining Heathers for a new generation, and bringing the story of a teenage sociopath and the Heathers (plus a Veronica) in his life to the small screen. Once upon a time, in the late 1980’s, Shannen Doherty’s Heather wore an iconic red scrunchie, and teens across the country watched her transform from “book worm Heather” to “queen bee Heather” as the film’s arc progressed.

Back in the late 1980’s and early 1990’s, Heathers(along with Shannen Doherty) amassed a huge cult following, and in the decades since, has even inspired a musical adaptation. The dark comedy has since been lauded as one of the best high school movies of all time, coming at number five on Entertainment Weekly’s 2006?50 Best High School Movies” list.

Now, it appears that Shannen Doherty is getting back into her pre-cancer groove by getting involved in the TV version of a film she helped make famous. When she posted her big news to Instagram, Shannen added the caption. “Sneak peek from the #Heathers set….. jealous much?” True to form, Shannen Doherty was also sporting her iconic red scrunchie from the original Heathers version.

While Shannen is seen sporting Heather Duke’s red scrunchie in the pic she posted to Instagram, it’s unknown whether Doherty will be reprising her old role or making a foray into uncharted waters. Both Shannen Doherty and the TV Land network are being fairly closed-lipped about the actress’s new role. It’s also unknown if any of the remaining original cast (including Winona Ryder and/or Christian Slater) will be joining Doherty.

It has been made public that the revamped version of the 80’s film will feature, alongside Shannen Doherty, a similarly dark vibe. The new series is also supposed to be “modernized,” not set in the original movie’s decade. TV Land has also talked about the way the new Heathers is going to be portrayed. Reportedly, it’s expected to be a multi-season series, with each new season focusing on a new leading lady (high school teen) dealing with a group of antagonistic Heathers. It’s unknown precisely how Shannen Doherty will fit into the grand scheme of things.

Some are taking her red scrunchie as a hint that Doherty may be portraying an “all grown up” Heather Duke, but neither Shannen nor TV Land will confirm that theory.

What is being said is that Shannen Doherty is going to be playing a “pivotal, unnamed character.” Is that character expected to remain in multiple seasons? No one knows.

The reimagined Heathers TV series is currently in production. So far there’s no word as to when it is expected to premiere featuring its new cast member, Shannen Doherty.
