Hummus Recall: Sabre Recalls Popular Hummus Dips Over Listeria Concerns

Sabra Dipping Company has recalled many of its hummus products over fears of possible listeria contamination. The voluntary recall was issued on November 19, 2016, and includes 57 different SKUs of the popular hummus products. However, Sabra has noted that no listeria has been found in the actual finished products, rather the listeria contamination was identified in the manufacturing facility. Therefore, the recall was issued out of an abundance of caution.

The FDA issued the Sabra Dipping Company recall yesterday and outlined the 57 different hummus products affected by the possible listeria contamination. The FDA notes that listeria can be serious, especially in pregnant women as it can cause stillbirths and miscarriages. The elderly and young children are also at increased risk of fatality when contracting Listeria monocytogenes. Therefore, Sabra is asking that anyone with one of the affected SKUs toss the product and contact them for a replacement coupon.

Below is a list of all affected Sabra hummus products:

The affected products all have a “Best Before” date of January 23, 2017, or before. Sabra is encouraging anyone with an affected product to throw it in the garbage before calling Sabra Consumer Relations at 1-866-265-6761 from 9:00 AM to 8:00 PM EST. Customers can also apply for a refund coupon by visiting Sabra’s recall website at http://www.sabrahummusrecall.com/.

Sabra pointed out that while 57 SKUs are affected by the recall, not all of their products are included in the recall. For example, Sabra organic hummus products, salsa and guacamole are not included in the recall. Similarly, the Sabra Greek Yogurt Dips are also excluded.

Sabra Dipping Company is just one of many manufacturers who have issued voluntary recalls in recent months due to potential listeria contamination. Blue Bell Ice Cream issued a widespread recall and subsequently closed down their Broken Arrow, Oklahoma, facility for a thorough cleaning following the issue. The recall was a first for Blue Bell, but unfortunately for ice cream lovers, didn’t end with the large 2015 recall. The ice cream company issued a series of recalls that stretched all the way into September of this year when the company’s cookie dough ice cream was recalled again for potential listeria contamination, according to CNN Money.

Fortune notes that this is not the first recall for Sabra. The company also recalled its hummus products back in 2015, when they voluntarily recalled 30,000 products after traces of the deadly bacteria were found. Unlike the current recall, the 2015 recall was issued after traces of the bacteria were found inside of the actual product containers. The listeria was discovered during a random product testing at a local retailer. As soon as the bacteria was confirmed, the products were removed from the shelves and recall promptly issued.

There is no indication that the products on store shelves are contaminated with the bacteria this recall; however, Sabra says they issued the voluntary recall out of an “abundance of caution” and want all consumers to dispose of the product and request their replacement coupon.

With the holidays quickly approaching and a rash of recent food recalls, many families may be leery about the food in their fridge. The best place to look for food recalls in on the FDA website where the agency keeps a running list of current recalls. Currently there are dozens of active recalls involving products such as baby food, popcorn balls and Weight Watchers frozen desserts.

The Sabra hummus recall has been administered in conjunction with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.
