Former Taiwan President, Wife Get Life Sentence For Corruption

Taipei, Taiwan (AHN) – A Taiwan court on Friday sentenced to life imprisonment former president Chen Shui-bian and his wife for taking bribes and embezzling and laundering money amounting to $24.5 million.
Taipei District Court Presiding Judge Tsai Shou-hsun also ordered Chen to pay a fine of $6.1 million. The former first lady, Wu Shu-jen, was fined $9 million.
Chen was at his cell at the Taipei Detention Center when the verdict was read. He was calm when he heard the decision over the television.
Eleven other people, including family members, who helped Chen and Wu deposit the money overseas were also sentence and fined by the court.
Chen’s son, Chen Chih-chung, was sentenced to two years and six months and fined $4.6 million, while his daughter-in-law, Huang Jui-ching, was sentenced to one year and eight months and fined $4.6 million.
Two former aides of Chen were also found guilty of helping Chen and his wife deposit money overseas. former deputy secretary-general Ma Yung-cheng received a 20-year sentence while former Presidential Office director Lin Teh-hsun got 16 years.
Chen had denied all charges against him and accused the government of President Ma Ying-jeou of persecuting him.
