China Protests U.S. Tire Tariffs, Threatens Retaliation

Beijing, China (AHN) – China on Saturday protested the three-year tariff on its tires imposed by the U.S. on Friday and threatened retaliation to protect Chinese firms.
Ministry of Commerce spokesman Yao Jian called Washington’s decision as trade protectionism and in violation of World Trade Organization rules. The tariff, which aims to restrict Chinese tire imports, also breaks a promise made by the U.S. in a G20 summit, Yao claimed.
The tariff lobbied by the U.S. Steelworkers Union puts a 35 percent duty on all car and light truck tires in the first year scaling down to 30 percent the following year and down to 25 percent in the third year.
The new tire tariffs will add to the existing four percent duty on Chinese tires.
