‘The Walking Dead,’ Season 7 Episode 4: Fans Think Daryl Was Using Morse Code And Rick Was Replying To Him

Episode 4 of AMC’s The Walking Dead saw a reunion, of sorts, between Rick Grimes and Daryl Dixon. While not being able to speak to each other, many fans are suggesting Rick and Daryl used Morse code to communicate.

Spoiler alert: This article discusses Season 7 of AMC’s The Walking Dead. Please proceed with caution if you wish to avoid spoilers.

In Episode 4 (entitled “Service”) of AMC’s The Walking Dead, Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) made his first visit to Alexandria to collect his tariff. Negan dragged Daryl (Norman Reedus) along with him to taunt Rick with the fact that he still had a member of Rick’s group. To add insult to injury, Rick and Daryl were not able to communicate with each other under Negan’s instruction. However, it seems fans have noticed something strange about Rick and Daryl’s encounter that may indicate the pair were using Morse code to communicate.

Episode 4 of The Walking Dead started with Michonne leaving the house early in the morning. While she was getting ready to leave, she passed the following picture hanging in her and Rick’s house.

That’s a pretty big picture there. It was hard for the audience to miss it. Further on in the episode, when Negan arrived at Alexandria with Daryl, some fans noticed Daryl did some pretty rapid blinking when he first saw Rick. Could it have been Morse code he was using?

If Daryl was using Morse code, what was he saying to Rick? Thanks to a previous Inquisitr article, it is possible Daryl said “I, E, A, S, T,” or, alternatively, “six miles East,” using Morse code. According to many fans, this could be interpreted as a direction in which Rick could find where Daryl is situated. Alternatively, some fans think Daryl could have been using Morse code to say “HT,” which is short for Hilltop, another compound in the area.

Finally, as Negan was leaving Alexandria, Rick is seen following the truck that had Daryl sitting in the back. Could Rick have been trying to understand a final Morse code message from Daryl? Only by tuning into future episodes of The Walking Dead will reveal the answers.

Some fans on Reddit have been suggesting Morse code has been mentioned previously in relation to Daryl Dixon. However, many sites are now reporting (after rewatching parts of the season involved) that Carol did not teach Daryl Morse code in Season 5 of The Walking Dead.

It should also be noted that some fans on Reddit have also suggested Rick was replying to Daryl in Morse code — by using Negan’s bat, Lucille. In some scenes of Episode 4 of The Walking Dead, Rick is seen to be tapping Lucille on the ground. So it is possible Rick was also using Morse code to reply to Daryl.

As Insider points out, there could be another legitimate reason Daryl was blinking so rapidly when he first saw Rick in Episode 4 of The Walking Dead. Daryl has been confined to a cell at the Saviors compound for some time now. His cell was dark for the most part, so coming out into broad daylight like that could make a person blink. However, Daryl did make the trip all the way from the Saviors compound. If he traveled to Alexandria in the same truck he left in, with the back open, it is likely his vision would have adjusted prior to him seeing Rick.
