A Racist Music Video, A Vicious Murder: Divided By An Ocean, United In Hate

Commentary | Today, as I paged through the Internet, looking for trending news and interesting stories, I came across two items that shook me to my very core. While they are quite different, and divided literally by an ocean, they share a hatred that runs so deep it its almost mind boggling.

The first item was a blog post by a grieving mother who saw her bright, happy, 18 year old daughter, Saskia Burke, brutally murdered before her eyes. The killer is alleged to be a young man who knew the family for 10 years, lived in their home and was thought to be a friend. They didn’t know the hatred he harbored for the entire family. It was only due to providence and their daughter’s dying screams that the four other members of the Burke family and their seven Christmas guests were not all slaughtered. That was Gary Simpson’s intention, according to the survivors; several of whom were seriously injured during the attack.

Saskia’s father, Paul Burke, said Simpson smiled as attacked his victims.

“The look on his face, the expression he wore was nothing I’ve ever seen before,” said Burke, when asked to describe his alleged encounter with Simpson as he came down the stairs to find his daughter’s lifeless body bleeding and covered in stab wounds.”

“When I first saw him it wasn’t the Gary I knew; it was a demon. During the event it smiled…”

It is not easy to imagine what kind of transformation could take place in a young man for someone that knew him for a decade to refer to him as “IT.” And while any murder is terrible and will haunt the survivors for a lifetime, this story does not end here. It has been alleged that young Mr. Simpson had a reason for his crime and he had been planning the attack for a year. Gary, it is claimed, hates white people and feels they are an inferior race.

The murder took place on December 20, 2011. Today, 10 months later, a truly insane announcement appeared on the National Black Foot Soldiers website. No matter what the motive was for the murder of Saskia Burke, the National Black Foot Soldiers celebrated her death and justify each and every murder of Caucasians by people of color as acceptable, divine retribution for the crimes of the White race.

“The white man has broken each of the Universe’s Divine Laws, grossly violated the human rights of all the non-white citizens of the earth and without regard plundered the earth herself in selfish exploitation of her resources. As such, we must welcome this: the emergence of the universal age of the white man’s karmic retribution,” says NBFSN Divine Karma interpreter Hallowed Yclept. “We know now that when any atrocity befalls any white person at the hands of any person of color it is in accordance with the edict and bounty the universe has issued against them for their Universal Law violations, failure to make restitution for their racial crimes and crimes against the planet.”

Several thousand miles away, separated by the deep, dark Atlantic Ocean, lies what used to be known as merry old England. Today Great Britain is a torn and divided nation. The gulf between native born Englishmen and women and the ever growing immigrant population is, perhaps, even wider than the ocean that separates the National Black Foot Soldiers and the increasing legions of xenophobes and nationalists who have risen in Britain.

One side celebrates the death of a harmless white American teenager and the other side condemns any and all foreigners, especially Muslim, just for being who they are. Most Americans have heard about the issues being raised in England; the complaints about foreigners taking over neighborhoods, the accusations that all immigrants only want to live on the dole. Muslims are singled out for their unwillingness to assimilate and accused of trying to impose Sharia on everyone.

Yet behind all the nastiness, lurks the wry British sense of humor. But even that has been corrupted and used to make one of the most racist music videos I have seen in quite some time.

Granted the video isn’t celebrating the death of an innocent, but it goes a long way towards portraying every single foreigner in Great Britain as a lazy, useless mooch, living of the backs of hard working citizens, while born and bred men and women are forced to sleep in the street or live in cardboard boxes.

Making matters even worse, is the fact that there are legitimate issues that are totally pushed to the side when hate dominates the debate. Certainly no sane person wants to live in the universe depicted by a madman like Anjem Choudary, who would return the world to the 7th century and force all of humanity to live under the yoke of his personal version of Islam; whether we like it or not. No one wants to live in a world where people trying to improve their existence are denied the right to a new home in a new country. Rational people have every right to be concerned and offended by the fascism of Choudary and his followers or the contempt espoused by those who would close a nation’s borders to all legal immigrants, but when we respond in kind, all we do is invalidate our side of the argument.

Unmitigated hatred is simply unacceptable in a civilized world. Disguising your racism and xenophobia behind a clever, catchy music video does not change the fact that you are still advocating a racist, xenophobic ideology. Blaming the mindless murder of a totally innocent young woman on the sins of people long dead, does not change the fact that you are advocating racist brutality and you are no different than the KKK or the lynch mobs of the Jim Crow South.

The times have changed. The names have changed. The hate is still the same. Hate will always be nothing but the emotions of people who have neither the desire or ability to listen and learn. They will never rise above their base emotions.

It is easy to destroy. It is easy to end a life. It is difficult to change the way a person thinks and teach them to open their heart to become a better, more loving human being. Today, I have been wounded to my core, but I will never give up and I will never stop trying to stop the hatred.
