LSU Football Contacts Jimbo Fisher’s Representatives About Becoming Next Head Coach For Tigers

When you’re the athletic director of one of the top football schools in the country, your options in a search for a new head coach are significantly higher and more prominent than that of a normal university. Take LSU for example. The Tigers have been connected to a number of the top coaches in the country, including North Carolina head coach Larry Fedora, Houston head coach Tom Herman, and Alabama offensive coordinator Lane Kiffin.

While any of those names would certainly get the fan base fired up, there’s one name that trumps all the others, and that is former LSU offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach Jimbo Fisher. Fisher was with the Tigers from 2000-06 before he left to become the offensive coordinator and eventual successor to Bobby Bowden at Florida State.

Since taking over for Bowden in 2010, Fisher has compiled an impressive 75-17 record and captured the BCS National Championship following the 2013 season. In addition, Jimbo has churned out three first-round quarterbacks during his seven seasons in Tallahassee, including Christian Ponder, E.J. Manuel, and Jameis Winston.

The biggest problem for Les Miles, and what ultimately led to his firing, was the inability to get consistent quarterback play. Due to those struggles, the Tigers haven’t appeared in a New Year’s Six Bowl since 2011 when they lost the BCS National Championship Game to Alabama and former LSU head coach Nick Saban.

Jimbo Fisher is well-known for his work with quarterbacks, and it’s what makes him so appealing to LSU athletic director Joe Alleva, according to Tomahawk Nation. The website reports that Fisher is “Alleva’s guy” and that the Tigers have already been in contact with Jimbo’s representatives.

Fisher was asked about the report following Tuesday’s practice, and he didn’t exactly shoot down the rumor that the Tigers had contacted his agent.

“I did [see the report] when I walked out of a meeting, had no idea. But here’s the thing: I’m not going to talk about any jobs. I love being at Florida State. I plan on being here and I’m just getting ready for Syracuse. That’s the last thing I’m going to say on that. No offense to anybody or anything else, that’s just what I’m going to do. I love being here.”

For the Florida State fans out there, Fisher isn’t saying he doesn’t have an interest going to Baton Rouge. It seems he carefully chose how to craft his words in the event that he decides become the LSU Tigers’ head coach following the season. Saying that “I love being here” or “I plan on being here” is not the same as saying “I am not going to LSU” or “I have no interest in the LSU job.”

Fedora has done a solid job at North Carolina and Southern Mississippi as he’s compiled a 73-42 career record and Tom Herman has gone 20-3 in two seasons at Houston. Both guys will be hot commodities for big-time head coaching jobs this offseason, but neither coach offers the proven track record of Jimbo Fisher.

LSU is one of the top-five head coaching jobs in college football, and it would come with a substantial raise for Fisher. It will be interesting to see if Alleva can do enough to lure Jimbo Fisher to Baton Rouge or if he’ll choose to stay in Tallahassee.
