People’s ‘Sexiest Man Alive’ Is Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, But How Does He Compare To Past Winners?

The Twitter-verse is abuzz with the news that former WWE superstar-turned-actor Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson was named People‘s “Sexiest Man Alive” for 2016. And while most of the responses to his win were positive, there were, of course, a few people who complained that other men — including former Game of Thrones star Jason Momoa, who is a legitimate contender, and The Hangover star Zach Galifianakis, who is decidedly not, were more worthy of the title. So, with this in mind, we decided to take a look at some of the past winners of People’s “Sexiest Man Alive” honors to see how The Rock measures up.

First up is 2014’s People‘s “Sexiest Man Alive” winner Chris Hemsworth, better known as the titular Thor to Avengers fans. The Australian actor took the news of the win in stride, joking to the outlet, at the time, that his win wouldn’t mean that he was exempt from changing diapers or taking care of the kids. In fact, the actor even read a vacuum cleaner manual during his interview with the outlet to show how good humored he truly was. So, when it comes to Chris Hemsworth, sexiness doesn’t just come from looks, but from his humor, as well.

Next up is the winner of People‘s “Sexiest Man Alive” back in 1998, and that was Harrison Ford. Best known as the swashbuckling space pirate, Han Solo, in the Star Wars saga, who met his maker at the hands of his wayward son, Ben “Kylo Ren” Solo, in The Force Awakens, and the swashbuckling archaeologist Indiana Jones in the movie saga of the same name, Ford was 56-years-old at the time he was given the title, making him one of the oldest winners in People Magazine‘s history.

And this fact was not unnoticed by the wry, sarcastic Ford, who quipped, “Why this sudden outpouring for geezers? I never feel sexy. I have a distant relationship with the mirror.”

Interestingly enough, on the cover of this week’s People Magazine that features The Rock, you’ll note that Carrie Fisher talked to the magazine about her “secret fling” with Ford throughout the filming of the Star Wars saga.

Finally, we go all the way back to 1991, when People‘s “Sexiest Man Alive” was none other than the late, great Patrick Swayze. At the time he was given the honor, Swayze had the success of the movies Dirty Dancing and Ghost under his belt, earning him a legion of loyal fans who thought that his elegance and grace were just the tip of the iceberg for this rugged Texan.

Demi Moore, his Ghost co-star, was the first to sing his praises when he won the title, gushing that it was a well-deserved honor for him.

Said Moore, at the time, “He has a very sweet, gentle, kind heart, and those southern manners. But he’s also got a very rugged, animalistic physique.”

Sadly, however, Patrick Swayze passed away in 2009, at the age of 57, from complications due to cancer. He continues to remain greatly missed.
