Bernie Sanders Says The Democrats ‘Must Accept’ Donald Trump’s Presidency, Calls For Unity Instead Of Protests

Vermont Senator, Bernie Sanders said on Sunday that the President-elect, Donald Trump won the election “fair and square”—and the Democrats must shift their focus to hold him “accountable,” CBS News reports.

“He won the election,” Bernie told CBS’ Face the Nation. “I did everything I could to see that he not become elected, but he won. Our job now is to hold him accountable.”

Sanders said there some common ground to be had with Trump and hopes that both the Republican and Democratic parties can work with him to create unity in our nation. Bernie admitted that Donald tapped into the anger and frustration among the white working class and struck a chord with many voters who wanted a change in the political system.

“If Mr. Trump, in fact, has the courage to take on Wall Street, to take on the drug companies, to try to go forward to create a better life for working people we will work with him on an issue by issue,” Sanders explained. “But if his presidency is going to be about discrimination, if it’s going to be about scapegoating immigrants or scapegoating African-Americans or Muslims, we will oppose him vigorously.”

The next question Democrats have to answer is why they lost on election day, not just for the presidential race, but in the Senate and House of Representatives, both local and state. Bernie believes the way the liberals campaigned played a role in why they lost on November 8.

“How does it happen that they win elections and Democrats lose? And I think what the conclusion is Democrats have focused too much with a liberal elite which is raising incredible sums of money from wealthy people in the upper middle class but has ignored to a very significant degree the working class and the middle class and low-income people in this country,” Bernie explained.

Sanders went on to add that one of the main reasons that the Democrats lost was due to Donald Trump—-he has “very good political instincts.”

“What he understood, which many Democrats did not, which is if you are an average American out there making $30, 40, 50 thousand dollars a year … you know what, John, you’re pissed off, and not happy about it, when you see your jobs to go to China,” Bernie explained.

Sanders went on to state that he hopes to create a movement which will “transform the country, and bring people together around an agenda that works for the middle class and working families.”

Sanders’ question for Trump is whether the President-elect will be able to do something to make good on the promises he made to help the country’s frustrated working class. If he’s unable to come up with any solutions for them, he will not have a successful first term.

“You talked about being the champion of the working families — all right now produce. Your rhetoric was great, now do something,” Bernie said of Trump’s plans for America. “But we will not accept racism; we will not accept sexism or xenophobia.”

Bernie hopes that Donald Trump will make good on his word and try his best to improve the quality of life for the working middle class. Trump’s plan for America is not a bad one, but Sanders doubts that he can execute it.

Sanders explained that people in America are sick of working longer hours for a lower wage and seeing all the decent jobs being shipped overseas. He added that if Trump can fix that issue alone, America will be in better shape when he leaves office, Time reports.

Do you think Donald Trump can help the working middle class? Do you think Hillary Clinton’s supporters will listen to Bernie Sanders and accept that he won the election, “fair and square”?
