Tyron Woodley On A Possible Fight With Conor McGregor: ‘If He Wants The Fight We Can Sign It Right Now’

On Saturday night, Conor McGregor once again proved why he’s considered to be one of the best fighters in the world by knocking out UFC lightweight champion Eddie Alvarez, and becoming the first fighter in UFC history to hold a championship in two different weight divisions simultaneously. But, will he make history yet again by becoming the first ever three division champion? That question remains unanswered, but the current welterweight champion — Tryon Woodley — says that he’ll defend his title against “Mystic Mac” if the UFC’s pay-per-view king wants to move up in weight.

While speaking with the media following this past Saturday’s UFC 205 show, Woodley said that he’s open to fighting McGregor, and he seemed confident that he’d be able to walk right through the current featherweight and lightweight champion because of the difference in size between the two of them.

“To be straight up honest, Conor McGregor is a guy that’s fought at 145. I haven’t weighed 145 since my sophomore year in high school. I’m 100 percent positive he’s never been hit with the shots I’ll hit him with… I just don’t think Conor understands the pressure I can put on him, the power I can put on him, and all the different attacks. So i think it’s good for media but in general I don’t know how I can win. If I beat him, everyone will say I was supposed to beat him — he’s a former featherweight. If I lose to him, obviously we know what’s going to happen there.”

He also said that if McGregor wants to fight him, he’d be willing to sign the contract immediately.

“If he wants the fight, we can sign it right now. I’m good on the fight. I just don’t think it’s a good idea for him to fight me.”

Could a Conor McGregor vs. Tyron Woodley fight happen? Sure. But it probably won’t happen anytime soon.

Woodley has been angling for a big money fight ever since he won the welterweight championship earlier this year. In fact, at one point, he was unwilling to defend his newly won championship against Stephen “Wonderboy” Thompson because he was hoping to get a fight with either Nick Diaz or Georges St-Pierre. But, when it became clear that neither fight was going to happen, he was more than willing to defend against “Wonderboy.”

UFC president Dana White said at the UFC 205 post-fight press conference that Woodley’s next fight will be a rematch with Thompson, because the two fought to a draw this past Saturday night. Right now, the only other opponent in the welterweight division that would make sense for him is Demian Maia, who has been asking for a title fight for quite some time now.

While the UFC president may not give McGregor the next shot at Woodley, there’s a chance that the welterweight champion could get his wish for a big money fight at some point in the near future, as Georges St-Pierre, who is one of the biggest pay-per-view draws in UFC history, will probably make his return to the Octagon within the next six months. Of course, GSP retired as the welterweight champion, so he does deserve a shot to regain the title that he never lost.

There’s also a chance that Woodley will miss out on a fight with St-Pierre when he returns because the ex-welterweight champion has been talking about a fight with UFC middleweight champion Michael Bisping. But, it looks like Bisping will defend his title against Yoel Romero at some point next year, so GSP may have to challenge for the welterweight title.
