Asra Nomani, A Muslim Woman, Had Two Reasons To Dump Trump, But She Didn’t: Here’s Why

Asra Q. Nomani had two solid reasons for not casting a vote for Donald Trump: she’s a woman and practices Islam. However, she, like many others, went against the grain and voted to elect Donald J. Trump the 45th President of the United States of America.

According to a Fox News report, Nomani is among a group of so-called “silent supporters” of the real estate tycoon-turned-president-elect. ‘

Asra Nomani, a former journalist, once worked with the Wall Street Journal. She is also a co-founder of the Muslim Reform Movement and the author of two books: Standing Alone in Mecca: An American Woman’s Struggle for the Soul of Islam and Tantrika: Traveling the Road of Divine Love.

On Sunday, Nomani wrote an opinion piece in the Washington Post.

The 51-year-old woman, a self-described longtime liberal, is the subject of backlash for casting her controversial vote. She began the “confession” post by providing a rationale for her choice in the White House.

“I — a 51-year-old, a Muslim, an immigrant woman ‘of color’ — am one of those silent voters for Donald Trump. And I’m not a ‘bigot,’ ‘racist,’ ‘chauvinist’ or ‘white supremacist,’ as Trump voters are being called, nor part of some ‘whitelash.'”

The proud West Virginia native praises her state for being on the “correct side of history on slavery,” a reference to the Union and Confederacy regarding the Civil War. Later, she moved to the neighboring state of Virginia to help usher in the presidency of the nation’s first black president.

Over the years, Nomani developed a change of heart. After supporting Obama for both terms, she made a critical decision to defect over one crucial issue: Islamic terrorism.

“As a liberal Muslim who has experienced, first-hand Islamic extremism in this world, I have been opposed to the decision by President Obama and the Democratic Party to tap dance around the ‘Islam’ in Islamic State,” Nomani wrote.

Despite her awareness that Trump — for the most part — represents most of everything she feels strongly against, his stance on extremism was the tipping point.

“He is insensitive at times with what he says and his proposals are tough, but they reflect a reality of concern people have about an issue that’s killing people from Orlando to Paris,” she told Fox.

Nomani acknowledges areas of the Democratic platform that she says is good for America: same-sex marriage stance, support for Planned Parenthood and global warming. On the contrary, she points out areas where Democrats and the Obama Administration have fallen short among middle-class families and workers.

One area of deficiency is Obamacare. As the Muslim woman points out, she cannot afford the rising premiums under the president’s healthcare plan. Moreover, she recalls how she and many other homeowners fared years ago during the foreclosure crisis.

“The president’s mortgage loan modification program, ‘HOPE NOW,’ didn’t help me. Tuesday, I drove into Virginia from my hometown of Morgantown, W.Va., where I see rural America and ordinary Americans, like me, still struggling to make ends meet, after eight years of the Obama administration.”

The newly minted Trump supporter recounts her experience “firsthand” with Islamic extremism. She accuses Barack Obama of being politically correct on the issue of extremism. She points to widespread bloodshed overseas in terror hotbeds and the recent mass shooting in Orlando, Florida at Pulse nightclub

The liberal Muslim, like other patriots, rejects Trump’s harsh rhetoric, disagrees with banning Muslims and deporting illegal immigrants, denounces Trump’s “locker room” talk, and desires equal pay for all women.

Asra Nomani realizes she took a radical step in supporting Trump, but she believes in the strength and resiliency of America. Nevertheless, political hyperbole undermines the pulse of the country, and that is unacceptable.
