Andrew Cuomo Encourages Minorities Who Feel ‘Under Attack’ By President-Elect Donald Trump, To Seek ‘Refuge’ In New York

Andrew Cuomo tweeted an all-call for minority Americans to come seek refuge in New York. The Governor’s lengthy message relates to fears liberal voters have voiced after their favored candidate lost the election.

Governor Andrew Cuomo said anyone who feels they are “under attack” are welcome to come to his state. Many liberal voters have claimed President-elect Donald Trump is a racist and have taken over the streets in Democratic strongholds across the country to proclaim he is not their president.

“Whether you are gay or straight, Muslim or Christian, rich or poor, black or white or brown, we respect all people in the state of New York,” Andrew Cuomo said in his message.

Cuomo’s offering of refuge for fearful liberals also included an appeal for donations to the New York Democratic Party, the Daily Mail reports.

After the governor posted his open invitation to come to New York on Facebook, it was reportedly shared more than 75,000 times.

“The state of New York has a proud legacy as the progressive capital of the nation, and that is more important today than ever before,” Governor Cuomo said. “As New Yorkers, we have fundamentally different philosophies than what Donald Trump laid out in his campaign.”

Not everyone in New York will agree with Andrew Cuomo. President-elect Trump did actually get votes in the state. In New York, as elsewhere around the country, rural and small town voters came out by the tens of millions for the outsider candidate. Trump also garnered a plethora of support from working class voters in urban areas.

“So let me be absolutely clear: If anyone feels that they are under attack, I want them to know that the state of New York – the state that has the Statue of Liberty in its harbor – is their refuge,” Cuomo continued.

The New York Governor also went on to say “attacks” on immigrants by the federal government will not be allowed in his state. Exactly what type of attacks Andrew Cuomo is envisioning remains unclear. Donald Trump has repeatedly stated his opposition to the current policy and programs related to illegal immigration. But the President-elect has not stated any desire to curtail legal immigration into the United States.

“It’s the very core of what we believe and who we are. But it’s not just what we say, we passed laws that reflect it, and we will continue to do so, no matter what happens nationally,” Cuomo also said. “We are New York, and we will stand up for you. And on that, I will never compromise. Count on it.”

Andrew Cuomo may be gearing up to run against President-elect Trump in four years. Political consultant Hank Sheinkopf, who has worked with the New York Governor in the past, said “He never had it so good,” during an interview with Politico. Sheinkopf reportedly worked on Cuomo’s re-election campaign in 2014.

The governor’s anti-Trump tone in the message to minority Americans is starkly different than the tact he took during a phone conversation with the 2016 presidential race winner after the election. Cuomo reportedly said he had a pleasant chat with the President-elect when sharing his ideas about how to upgrade the transportation infrastructure in New York. Andrew Cuomo said the election loss of his “friend” Hillary Clinton made for an “emotional day.”
