‘No One Can Hear You’, Says Serial Rapist To Victim As Wife Sat In Next Room

A serial rapist will spend the last of his days behind bars after being sentenced to 18 years in prison for crimes he committed nearly 40 years ago.

Ronald Bartholomew, of Rochester in Kent, is now 67-years-old and in poor health. As the judge spoke to Bartholomew about the crimes he was accused of, he had to sit close so his hearing aid could pick up the words that were directed at him.

The serial rapist repeatedly sexually assaulted his victims, playing on fearful rumors that he stabbed a man, in an attempt to keep the upper hand in the horrific acts of sexual abuse. In one instance, as he held his victim down on the bed in the room adjacent to where his deaf wife sat, he triumphantly proclaimed that no one could hear her screams as he took joy in her cries of pain and fear, according to Metro.

“No one can hear you.”

The two girls he targeted finally came forward after nearly 40 years, showing their bravery as they supported each other to finally put Bartholomew behind bars.

During the trial, Batholomew admitted to the charges of rape, as well as to nine cases of indecent exposure, according to Kent Online. In his mind, he seemed to have moved on from being a sexual predator and chose to lock himself away in his home where he could deal with his poor health in peace, according to his lawyer, Simon Reevell.

Bartholomew has served time for previous cases of indecent exposure, but none led to identifying him as a serial rapist.

Judge Jeremy Carey was appalled by the sexual assaults that were described by Bartholomew’s victims. The manner in which Bartholomew gained his victims’ trust was disgusting and psychotic in nature.

“The most invasive and disgusting manner”

Testimony by the girls, now adults, told that Bartholomew would take three young girls camping and use the opportunity to rape one of his victims as the other two played. Often he would play as though he was one of the children, offering piggy back rides and other touchy-feely games to get close to them.

The serial rapist would then use the trust he gained to lure one of the girls away to a secluded spot and forcefully rape her. Prosecutor Amanda Hamilton told how Bartholomew threatened to kill his victim as she screamed in the woods.

“She was terrified. She screamed as loudly as she could. He told her to shut up, put his hand over her mouth and threatened to kill her.She had heard he had been in prison for stabbing a woman, which wasn’t true. She was shocked. She tried to run away but he grabbed her wrist.”

The girl did not tell anyone of the horrific sexual assault, for fear she would be killed. Later, she did mention the assault to a teacher during a lesson. However, when police arrived at her home, the victim’s mother stated that she was known to be a habitual liar, and the case was not pursued.

Bartholomew’s history of sexual assault played a significant role in his final conviction of 18 years in prison. Being 67 years old, he will not be eligible for release until he is 85. With his poor health, it is expected that he will die in prison.

As he was sentenced, one of the victims spoke to Bartholomew, proclaiming how horrific the sexual assault’s impact was on her life.

“No amount of words can describe what he did to me all those years ago.”

Detective Constable Wendy Epps had the final words on the case, summing up the sentencing in few words.

“This was an appalling crime by a man who inflicted both physical and emotional pain on two young children over a long time. This has been extremely hard for the victims and I would like to praise them for their courage and bravery in speaking out against this vile individual.”
