Dave Chappelle Brings To ‘SNL’ Characters From His Old Show In ‘Walking Dead’ Parody

Dave Chappelle’s monologue at the start of SNL may be the most talked about segment on the show, but a Walking Dead sketch midway through the episode is getting lots of attention because it made people reminisce about the comedian’s previous show.

In last Saturday’s episode, comedian Dave Chappelle shared a moving and poignant message of hope in a time of confusion and despair brought about by the 2016 presidential election’s results.

Chappelle started his monologue with a few jabs at President-elect Donald Trump, saying that America has finally elected an “internet troll” as its president.

But towards the end of his speech, Chappelle shared a moving anecdote that he hoped would leave a lasting effect on the 45th president of the United States of America.

Chappelle said that he is willing to give Donald Trump a chance to prove he is worthy of the position he is about to take because he believes that America has evolved into a nation with great capacity for kindness and tolerance.

But he also demands that Trump show him and the rest of the African-American community kindness and respect as well.

It was an electrifying speech and if it was the only segment in last Saturday’s episode most viewers would probably admit that it was enough for them.

But Chappelle still had lots to offer and his Walking Dead sketch made everyone laugh because it reminded them about Chappelle’s previous comedy show.

Towards the middle of the show Chappelle went back on stage and told the audience that a lot of people have been asking him if he was going to feature characters from his old sketch comedy series Chappelle’s Show.

He said that he didn’t have any plans of rehashing his old characters but when he watched the first episode of The Walking Dead’s seventh season he couldn’t help but come up with a parody of that particular episode.

Chappelle spoke about Glenn Rhee (Steven Yeun) and how messed up it was that he had to die like that.

So after mulling it over Chappelle decided to come up with his own sketch that satirizes that scene on The Walking Dead where Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) crushes Glenn’s skull with a bat.

According to USA Today, in Chappelle’s Walking Dead sketch people saw familiar faces such as Tyrone Biggums the crack addict, Silky Johnson the winner of the “Playa Haters Ball,” Chuck Taylor, Lil Jon and African-American white supremacist Clayton Bigsby.

It was a raucous trip down memory lane when Chappelle featured most of his iconic characters from his old show (unfortunately, Chappelle didn’t include one of his best characters—Rick James) and Chappelle himself portrayed Negan, the bloodthirsty leader of the Saviors.

Chappelle mimicked Negan and he even chanted his own version of a nursery rhyme to choose who among the characters will die first.

Chappelle’s Negan said “Bubblegum, bubblegum in a dish. How many pieces do you wish?”

When he ended up with Tyrone, the crack addict was anything but scared. He even asked for some bubblegum from Negan.

Chappelle’s Negan said that Tyrone is one feisty guy, and the crack addict responded.

“Well with all due respect Mister Negan, in my line of work, when you’re on your knees they don’t give you bubblegum… they give you penis.”

After that Silky Johnson and his compatriot Beautiful, portrayed by comedian Donell Rawlings, took potshots at Negan saying that he looks more like a “Stephanie.”

After that Negan moved to Chuck Taylor, Chappelle’s impersonation of a Caucasian news anchor on his previous show.

Chuck simply whimpered while Lil Jon kept shouting “What?!” which the real rapper often does. Then Negan moved on to Clayton with the latter sprouting nothing but racial slurs that are offensive to African-Americans despite him being a black man himself.

Finally, Negan swung his bat at Tyrone but the crack addict didn’t die despite his head separating from his whole body.

After that Tyrone started a monologue telling the viewers that this is the only way for them to move on from their current predicament, which is through laughter.

Dave Chappelle’s parody of The Walking Dead may be funny trip down memory lane but it also served as a reminder to Americans that even in their darkest hour they can still find something to laugh about.
