‘Game of Thrones’ Season 7: Filming Reveals Tyrell/Lannister Battle, More [Spoilers]

Warning: This article may contain Game of Thrones Season 7 spoilers.

Game of Thrones Season 7 crews have been hard at work filming in Spain for several weeks. As the Inquistr previously noted, local fans enjoyed several sightings of the GoT cast when they filmed in Seville last month. Now, shooting has moved to Almodóvar del Rio Castle in Córdoba, according to Watchers On The Wall. The fan site reports the Muslim castle, which dates back to the 8th century, will be used as Highgarden, and a confrontation between the Lannister soldiers and the Tyrells will be filmed within the fortress.

Spanish site Cordópolis says a Córdoba resident has been chosen as the body double for Diana Rigg’s character, Olenna Tyrell, and set spies reveal three extras have been seen wearing costumes from the Stark family. However, WOTW warns that information has not been independently confirmed.

Almodóvar del Rio Castle has been renovated many times over the centuries, and different parts of the castle could be used for different locations. This could be relevant because behind-the-scenes photos reveal a Lannister flag flying over the castle. One theory is that the Lannisters could take over Highgarden at some point during Game of Thrones Season 7, but another possibility is that the castle is being used for portraying Casterly Rock as well as Highgarden. In support of the latter theory is a report by WOTW that actor Jacob Anderson (Grey Worm) appeared on set, which is significant because Season 7 spoilers say Grey Worm will not appear at Highgarden but will instead lead his Unsullied army in an assault on Casterly Rock.

So, in summary, it appears Almodóvar del Rio Castle will serve as both Highgarden and Casterly Rock, and spoilers suggest a huge land battle will take place around the Tyrell fortress, with Daenerys and dragons leading her Dothraki horde in an attack against Bronn, Jaime, and the Lannisters. However, that battle won’t be filmed at the castle. As the Inquisitr recently noted, that massive battle will be filmed in Malpartida with 500 extras trained by the British military.

In other Game of Thrones Season 7 filming news, fans report Maisie William was spotted at the Belfast City Airport.

Meanwhile, Kristofer Hivju (Tormund Giantsbanewas) seen at his Belfast hotel and posted a picture of his epic beard on Instagram.

There is speculation Hivju could be filming with Kit Harington (Jon Snow), who recently returned to the GoT studios in Northern Ireland from location shooting in Seville, Spain. WOTW reports that Game of Thrones Season 7 crews have been preparing an area of Belfast hills known as Wolf Hill Quarry for filming. Apparently, green screens have been erected and fake snow has been added to the location. The quarry, which was also used for the film Dracula Untold, has not been officially confirmed as a Game of Thrones site, but a quarry employee reportedly told a WOTW source that GoT was renting the location.

Finally, while we wait for Game of Thrones Season 7 to air in the summer of 2017, we can enjoy a juicy deleted scene from the upcoming DVD and Blu-ray release of Season 6, which was just posted by Entertainment Weekly. In the clip, from Episode 6.02, Olenna and her son Mace Tyrell (Roger Ashton-Griffiths) ride a litter through the roads of Kings Landing while hatching a plot against Cersei (Lena Headey). The scene doesn’t move the plot forward much but adds to our understanding of Mace and is a joy to watch for the acting of Diana Rigg alone. Game of Thrones: The Complete Sixth Season will be released on Tuesday, November 15.
