Buyers attempting to get their hands on the Microsoft Surface RT tablet when it debuts on October 26 may be out of luck. Microsoft’s product page for the new 32GB and 64GB tablets are now listing the devices as “out of stock” for new orders.

The new tablet with its sleek design and Windows OS was only on sale for four days before selling out. The Surface RT tablet will begin shipping on October 26.

New customers could wait up to three weeks for 32GB models according to the Surface RT website. 64GB buyers should receive their devices in a shorter one to two weeks.

According to Engadget, Microsoft sent out an email to customers who pre-ordered the devices in the UK and Canada. In the email, Microsoft told some customers that their order would be delayed until November 2. That email was eventually “recalled,” and Microsoft said customers who had pre-ordered the devices would receive them on-time.

Sold out devices do not necessarily mean high demand. In some cases, companies simply produce a smaller initial production run in order to gauge interest in a new product type. Microsoft has not revealed how many “initial run” Surface RT tablets it has produced. Industry experts have estimated that Microsoft will ship three million to five million devices by the end of 2012.

Industry expectations include both the Windows Surface RT and Windows Surface Pro. The latter device will run a full version of Windows 8.

Which version of the Windows Surface tablet would you rather get your hands on?
