‘Prison Break’ Season 5: Will Alexander Mahone Return For The New Season?

Prison Break fans are eager for more news about the upcoming season, airing in 2017. One of the big questions fans have is whether Alexander Mahone will return for Prison Break Season 5. None of the trailers show him, and it turns out that the character may not be seen again.

Alexander Mahone, played by William Fichtner, was brought into Prison Break in Season 2. He was introduced mainly as the FBI agent to track down the Fox River Eight, but ended up becoming Michael Scolfield’s alter-ego. Fans instantly drew to him, especially as his backstory unfolded. By Season 3, fans were ready for him and Scolfield to work together, but in Season 4 he was given his own storyline. After the murder of his son by The Company, Mahone was out for revenge. He also became friends with Michael, and eventually helped Michael break Sara out of prison in the two-hour Prison Break “movie” finale.

Prison Break Season 5 will be set in the current timeline. Seven years will have passed, and we already know that most of the original main cast will return. We will get to see Michael and Lincoln reunite, with C-Note, T-Bag, and Sucre turning up to help Linc get his brother out of the Yemen prison. Even Paul Kellerman has been confirmed for the new season, along with Sara.

The only person missing from all the Season 5 trailers and news has been Mahone. It turns out that fans of the former FBI agent will be disappointed, because there isn’t a way to write him into the storyline.

One thing that Paul Scheuring didn’t want to do is just write all the characters back into Prison Break Season 5 for the sake of it, according to International Business Times. The storyline had to be believable, and that isn’t something he can manage with Mahone’s character.

Every character will have a genuine reason to be brought back into the story. For it to be believable, Linc and Sara would have to show up. T-Bag is the one that gets the news that Michael is still alive and now stuck in a prison in Yemen. Of course Linc would want to get out there and save his brother; doing for him what Michael had done for Linc when Prison Break started. It wouldn’t have made sense to bring Michael and Linc back without having Sara there.

So, each character will be crucial to the storyline. Mahone can’t come back unless there is a reason for it.

That doesn’t mean there is no hope of ever seeing Mahone again. Prison Break Season 5 doesn’t have to be the end. Depending on how the show is received, it could get another season after this. There is hope that a new storyline would bring in the need of Mahone’s character again.

Fans were lucky to get him for the last three seasons of the show, anyway. Fichtner was intrigued by the character and decided to sign on for two seasons. The Prison Break producers had to convince him to come back for the final season. It could have been very different had Fichtner decided not to agree to it.

The show may have gone on longer. Fichtner agreed to doing two more seasons after Season 4, but the show was canceled. It turns out that Prison Break‘s filming was move to L.A. just to keep Fichtner, who was fed up of being away from his family.

Those who are hoping for Alexander Mahone in Prison Break Season 5 will be disappointed. That doesn’t mean his character won’t eventually turn up, but it’s up to Scheuring to find a plausible storyline to bring the character back.

Prison Break Season 5 premieres on Fox in January 2017.
