Paranormal Activity 4 topped the weekend box office ahead of movies like Argo, Alex Cross, and Taken 2 with a $30 million haul.

According to Box Office Mojo, the latest installment in the Paranormal Activity franchised took in $30.2 million during its opening weekend.

The movie has been criticized for being a formulaic horror movie. It is, after all, the fourth movie in the series.

The Las Vegas Weekly writes: “Trotting out the same types of scares, the same plot structure and the same found-footage format gets less effective with each installment.”

Ben Affleck’s critically acclaimed Argo finished the weekend with $16.6 million behind Adam Sandler’s Hotel Transylvania which added another $13.5 million to its total. The animated movie has brought in a total of $119 million and could see a boost next weekend for Halloween.

Liam Neeson’s new movie Taken 2 finished in fourth for the weekend ahead of Tyler Perry’s new action movie Alex Cross.

Alex Cross, which has been dubbed by some critics as the “stupidest movie of the year,” managed to bring in $11.7 million during its opening weekend.
