Trucker Convicted Of Keeping Women As Sex Slaves Sentenced And Gets 20 Years

A Utah trucker has plead guilty to keeping women as sex slaves in his semi-trailer while he traveled across country. Timothy Jay Vafeades has since been sentenced to 20 years in prison for his crimes.

The 56-year-old, according to federal prosecutors, is guilty of sexually assaulting and beating his victims on the daily and he also ground down their teeth, after he trapped them in his truck.

One of the convicted’s victims shared with a judge that the horrific ordeal she suffered over a number of months, started when she entered his truck to go to dinner with him. She noted that she began to worry when she became aware of the fact that they were not heading in the direction of any restaurants. The Associated Press shares the words of the said victim as well as additional details.

“He then said, ‘I got you now. You are mine,” she said. The vampire-obsessed truck driver controlled nearly every aspect of her life, including how she used the bathroom, she said.

In the court when he was sentenced, Vafeades wore glasses and a gray jail jumpsuit, where he gave an apology and showed emotion.

“I am sorry for my life. I am sorry for not recognizing myself and what a monster I am,” he said.

U.S. District Judge David Nuffer stated that the abuse and horrific treatment that the women shared they suffered were some of the most horrendous things he’d come across during his career. He relayed that reading the victims’ statements was traumatic “and I didn’t have to live it,” he continued.

The sentenced handed to Vafeades was given based on a plea deal the convicted made with prosecutors. He also ordered that Vafeades attend treatment and be subject to a lifetime of court supervision after his release.

The trucker reportedly suffered serious abuse as a child and is said to have repeated those patterns with his own victims, his lawyer Vanessa Ramos stated. Prosecutors shared that Vafeades was also obsessed with vampires, as he called his truck the “Twilight Express” and used the program Photoshop to make images of himself including coffins. He additionally wore a set of vampire fangs. His habit of grinding down his victims’ teeth reportedly was unrelated to this fascination. It was instead a way for him to fix perceived flaws in them, which left them permanently damaged, prosecutors state.

“He had the ability to manipulate and brutalize these women beyond anything we could comprehend,” the prosecution shared.

The publication relays the longevity of Vafeades crimes against various women.

“He abused six women in similar ways over two decades, she said. Charges were filed in two cases of women aged 18 and 19. The other cases date back up to 20 years and were too old for criminal cases when the allegations came to light, authorities have said.”

The vampire enthusiast was arrested when officers noticed at a weigh station in Minnesota that a woman in his company had bruises all over her face and discovered that Vafeades had a restraining order that barred him from contacting the 19-year-old woman.

She had known Vefeades voluntarily and worked with him, but when she decided to leave, he attacked her, prosecutors share. Following his 2014 arrest, another woman went to authorities to report she had been held captive in the truck of Vefeades. He plead guilty in June to two counts of transporting for illegal sexual activity. Kidnapping charges were dropped in exchange for his plea.

The seriousness of the charges means that criticism has been raised that the sentence given is too short, yet the plea deal brought the closure needed by the victims and kept them from needing to testify. If the case went to trial, Vefeades would have gotten a maximum of 25 years, the judge said.
