WWE News: Rey Mysterio’s Son Dominick Gutierrez To Begin Wrestling Training In January

Wrestling fans may remember Rey Mysterio’s son as the cute young kid who took part in a rather controversial storyline involving his father and the late Eddie Guerrero. That happened in 2005 when Dominick Gutierrez was only about 8-years-old. And now that he’s in his late-teens and a college student, it would appear that his legendary father is planning to start training him in the ring by the start of next year.

The months leading up to Eddie Guerrero’s death in November 2005 saw “Latino Heat” involved in arguably the most intense heel turn he made in his career – an angle where a jealous Eddie brutally attacked real-life and storyline friend Mysterio (aka Oscar Gutierrez in real life) after weeks of tension between both men. The turn became controversial, however, when Rey Mysterio’s son was introduced to the storyline – weeks after turning on Rey, Eddie claimed to be Dominick’s biological father and threatened to take custody of the boy. This was eventually settled in a ladder match at SummerSlam 2005 for Dominick’s custody, with Mysterio going over and the feud ending in his favor.

While sites such as WrestleCrap have demeaned the custody feud as one of the most tasteless in WWE history, the SummerSlam match itself had still gotten praise for its execution and the in-ring talent of both men involved in it. WhatCulture, for example, called the match “another great outing” for Guerrero and Mysterio, even if the underlying storyline and the match’s premise earned the usual criticism.

With more than a decade having passed since that feud, Dominick Gutierrez is now in college and looks to be ready to enter the world of professional wrestling. That is, if he’s able to perform well under the tutelage of his father.

In a recent appearance on Keepin’ It 100 with Konnan, Mysterio appeared alongside podcast host Konnan and Eddie Guerrero’s widow Vickie as they commemorated the upcoming 11th anniversary of Guerrero’s passing. And it was there that Rey confirmed that he’ll start training his son Dominick once his body gets “in the right shape.”

Pro Wrestling Sheet quoted former WWE standout Mysterio, who expects the wrestling training to start in the second week of January 2017.

“Come January, I’m gonna get him in the ring and see how his reflexes are as soon as he steps into the ring. See what he can do, what he cannot do … and then go from there. And Konnan, I think he’s gonna be a part of this once I get him in there.”

At the moment, though, Dominick is focusing mainly on the preparation for in-ring training by getting in shape and working out as he has been for the past three months.

“He already started college, so I would love for him to get his degree. But as far as wrestling goes, we just started training together, he just started dieting (and) taking supplements, all these necessary things that he probably wasn’t doing in his high school years. So right now he’s going into about his third month of just lifting properly, without doing any powerlifting or heavy lifting at all. He’s just having a routine, a normal routine of working one to two body parts a day, five to six days a week, (and) eating right.”

Could Dominick Gutierrez join the ranks of other second-generation wrestlers who have made a name for themselves in WWE or elsewhere? As we’ve seen, there seems to be a Bo Dallas for every Bray Wyatt, or a David Flair for every Charlotte Flair. For each wrestling family scion who’s done well in WWE or in other major promotions, there’s always another who doesn’t quite live up to his or her pedigree. As Rey Mysterio’s son, Dominick will have a lot to live up to if and when he makes his pro wrestling debut. But he does have a good teacher who could set him on the right path to success in due time.
