Derek Jeter underwent surgery today on his fractured left ankle.

According to Newsday, the surgery was performed by Dr. Robert Anderson in Charlotte, North Carolina. Anderson has worked on several athletes, including Houston Texans QB Matt Schaub and New York Giants running back Ahmad Bradshaw.

Schaub said:

“Jeter is in great hands … Dr. Anderson is the best in the business at what he does.”

Jeter is expected to make a full recovery by next April. Dr. Steven Weinfeld said that Jeter could be back on his feet and running by February.

Weinfeld, an orthopedic surgeon at Mount Sinai School of Medicine, said:

“I think (opening day) is a reasonable goal assuming everything goes smoothly. Most patients can start running activities at three months.”

The Yankees said that they expect Jeter to be ready in about four to five months. Yankees general manager Brian Cashman said that he wasn’t sure if the star shortstop would be ready for opening day.

When asked about the timeline Cashman simply said: “He’ll be ready when he’s ready.”

Derek Jeter underwent surgery today to repair a left ankle fracture. Complete recovery is expected to take 4-5 months.

Jeter injured his ankle during the 12 inning of Game 1 of the American League Championship Series. During the six post-season games Jeter played this year he hit .333. He had 15 home runs during the regular season and 58 RBIs.
