Nicolas Cage is all set to star in the upcoming reboot of the Christian-based thriller Left Behind, Cinema Blend reports. The actor, who has been quite prolific as of late, is rumored to be attached to the forthcoming production. Although Cage’s detractors may think his cinematic choices are more than a little bizarre, they can never say the Ghost Rider star isn’t afraid to take risks.

It’s currently unknown what role Cage will tackle in the reboot. Regardless, his presence in the $15 million feature will no doubt help the motion picture get the attention it needs to be a box office success. Of course, a quick look at the amount of money the actor’s recent endeavors have generated suggests that his star power may not be as considerable as it was during the days of The Rock and Face/Off.

Directed by Vic Sarin and starring Growing Pains alum Kirk Cameron, the 2001 religious thriller Left Behind chronicles the adventures of those individuals left behind after the Rapture scoops up believers and carts them off to Heaven. Those who are still stranded on Earth soon discover that the Anti-Christ is getting ready to set up shop. While Nicolas Cage will likely portray the film’s hero, there’s always the possibility he could tackle the role of the Anti-Christ himself.

“Rayford Steele is an airline pilot whose relationship with his wife has gone sour;he ponders having an affair with an attractive flight attendant, Hattie Durham. In the midst of a flight to London, a number of their passengers mysteriously disappear, and chaos takes hold as a number of vehicles on the ground and in the air are suddenly unmanned. Meanwhile, Buck Williams, a television journalist, is pondering the rash of sudden disappearances as he works on a report about Dr. Chaim Rosenzweig, an Israeli scientist who has devised a formula that would make any soil on earth easy to cultivate.”

According to Variety, the Left Behind reboot will begin production next spring. If everything goes according to plan, the film will be released sometime towards the end of 2013. Samuel Goldwyn Films will provide theatrical distribution.
