According to WHPTV News, the accident happened around 8:30 pm Friday at the Paradise Township Community Park in Paradise Township.

Authorities say several dozen people attending a baseball game at the park sought shelter when a powerful storm swept through. Strong winds from the storm — which took down several trees and power lines –  led to the pavilion’s collapse.

While roughly 12 people– mostly kids ranging in ages from 8 to 14-years-old  — were hurt when the pavilion fell, police say there were no fatalities due to the fact the structure fell on some cars and that helped keep it from coming all the way down.

Emergency Management Director Randall Gockley says the pavilion was 40 feet by 40 feet.

Following the accident, nearly two ambulances and medic units responded to the scene.

“The biggest challenge was getting to the scene between the flooding and the wires down — the hardest part was getting everybody there and the equipment we needed there,” State Police Corporal Michael Spada told WHPTV.

One man is reported to have broken his leg and another cut his head.

A hospital official declined to release information about the other victims’ conditions.
