Dinesh D’Souza, the evangelical scholar known for attacking President Obama in books and a film, has resigned as president of King’s College, and evangelical Christian college in New York, following allegations of marital infidelity.

D’Souza’s resignation comes just days after it was reported that the married professor was spotted at a hotel room with another woman, and introducing her as his “fiancee” at a recent conference in South Carolina.

“After careful consultation with the Board and with Dinesh, we have accepted his resignation to allow him to attend to his personal and family needs. We thank him for his service and significant contribution to the College over the last two years,” board chairman Andy Mills said in a statement.

Though D’Souza has not returned ABC News calls for comment, a statement posted on his website read:

“I met Denise three months ago. We are not and have not been having an affair. Nor did we share a hotel room in Charlotte,” The Christian scholar also said that he didn’t know it was “considered wrong” to be engaged to someone while married to someone else. “I sought out advice about whether it is legal to be engaged prior to being divorced and I was informed that it is. Denise and I were trying to do the right thing. I had no idea that it is considered wrong in Christian circles to be engaged prior to being divorced, even though in a state of separation and in divorce proceedings,” he wrote.

D’Souza separated from his wife Dixie in 2010, and has filed for divorce.

Response to his resignation at King’s College has ranged from confused to positive. The Dartmouth reports that Luke Trouwborst, a King’s College student and editor of the independent campus opinion magazine The Lewis Review, wrote that “He so vigorously defended his innocence on Fox News,” that “If he was really innocent, I don’t know what he had to lose by staying at the school.”

“King’s College is not full of crazy conservatives such as conspiracy theorists — many students weren’t very happy with his recent documentary and his book,” he said. “There’s been a generally good reaction to his resignation.”

D’Souza gained international recognition and infamy for his recent film, 2016: Obama’s America, which was intended to sway votes heading into election season. With the infidelity charges and D’Souza’s resignation, his reputation and message are likely damaged beyond repair.
