California Mother Goes Missing During Afternoon Jog, Family Fears Abduction

A California mother-of-two Sherri Papini went missing on Wednesday afternoon while out for her daily jog. The 34-year-old woman spoke to her husband around lunch time and then allegedly went for a jog before picking her children up from daycare. However, Papini would never pick up her children and her husband would return home to find an empty house. Papini’s cell phone was later found alongside the jogging trail but there was no sign of the mother.

The Daily Mail reports that 34-year-old Sherri Papini went missing around 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday afternoon while jogging along the Old Oregon Trail and Sunrise Drive area. The mother reportedly had a daily routine in which she would head out for a jog and then pick up her children from daycare. However, on Wednesday, Papini did not return from her jog leaving her family and friends fearing the worst.

Sherri’s husband Keith Papini reportedly received a text message from Sherri just before her routine daily jog. She asked her husband if he would be returning home for lunch. Keith says he replied that he would not. That is the last time Keith would hear from Sherri. It is believed that the mother-of-two left for her jog shortly after Keith informed her he would not be coming home for lunch.

The mother had a routine in which she would eat lunch, go for a jog, and then pick up her two children from daycare before Keith returned home from work. However, on Wednesday, that routine changed. Keith returned home from work to find his home completely empty. He could not reach Sherri on her cell phone and tried using the Find My iPhone app to track down his wife and children. However, Keith would discover the iPhone laying in the grass near the jogging trail with Sherri nowhere to be found.

The father was then informed that his children were never picked up from daycare. Now the family is looking for answers. According to the Ventura County Star, the jogging trail was in the area surrounding her home and a common place for Sherri to run. Suzanne Papini, Sherri’s sister-in-law, says there is no way that the doting mother would leave her children behind like that. Suzanne says that in the days leading up to her disappearance, Sherri had been working hard on her garden and doing numerous projects, nothing to indicate she had plans of leaving. Suzanne says that the discovery of the cell phone is also alarming as she feels the way the cell phone was found indicates that Sherri was taken.

“I would say my personal reaction is that it’s twofold. One, is that is it’s good to have some sort of clue. The other portion is that it really points to she’s been taken. I mean, she wouldn’t just drop her phone if she was running away. So, at least it’s giving us some kind of information, but it’s pretty — we’re sick. This is a pretty sickening situation. It’s terrible. I’m just in a state of being emotionless so that I can do what needs to be done and take care of my brother.”

Meanwhile, the police are currently checking into the whereabouts of four registered sex offenders in the area and have had teams combing the area for signs of Sherri.

Deputies note that Sherri Papini is 5-foot-3 and weighs about 100 pounds. She was last seen wearing pink running clothes. Anyone with information relevant to the case is asked to call 245-6540. Tips also can be submitted via email to mcu@co.shasta.ca.us.
